Assignment Task

1. On a construction site it has been decided to establish a new temporary benchmark (TBM) at the other side of a building that will make it easier to set out other points on the site. The original benchmark is at British National Grid coordinates 402598.019, 264889.981. It has been determined that the bearing to a visible nearby Ordinance Survey triangulation station (trig point) is 318°42'20". A traverse to the new TBM is carried out. The results of which are given in Table 3.

Table 3: Traverse calculation table

Point    Bearnig       Coordinates
From  To  Degrees Minutes secpmd  Distance  X Y
Bench mark Trig point  318 42 20   402598.019 264889.981
Bench mark  A 31 10 20 136.204
A B 122 24 40 87.269
B TBM 243 46 0

155.872

TBM C 63 45 40 115.682
C D 302 14 40 87.070
D Bench mark 211 12 40 135.791
Bench mark TRig point  318 41 40

(a) On return to the original benchmark, it was observed that the bearing to the trig point was 318°41'40". Distribute the misclosure over all 7 angular measurements. You only need to do this to the nearest 20 seconds

(b) Determine the raw coordinates of the new TBM

(c) What is the total misclosure of coordinates in mm.

(d) Apply Bowditch's correction to distribute the misclosure in the traverse and hence find the corrected coordinates for the TBM.
