Rimu Art, an office furniture manufacturer, has a large number of sales representatives who sell its products to many organisations nationwide. To enable management to monitor the number and amount of sales for each representative, Rimu Art has decided to build a web-based information system that will track prices and inventory. Senior management has estimated that the total cost of this project should not exceed $50,000.
Rimu Art’s senior management has assigned Jennifer Green, Information Systems Manager, to be the project manager of the web-based reporting system development project. She drafted a list of the tasks to be done, with the immediate predecessor for each task listed to the right of the task as shown in Table 1.

Jennifer decided to involve her colleagues from the Information Systems Department in the project: Jocelyn Williams, Wally Techakrien, Craig Rhodes, Saurav Satyal, Andre Joubert, Rashmi Kotin, Ali Bayati, Brent Hawkins and Megumi Kato. Overall, the team agreed with the tasks and the sequence Jennifer had drafted. They used the information presented in Table 1 as a starting point for further refinement. After discussing the details of the project, they identified all the tasks that need to be accomplished, down to the work package level, and developed the work breakdown structure (WBS) shown in Figure 1. The level 1 tasks are problem definition, system analysis, system design, system development, testing and implementation. Each of these tasks is further broken down into level 2 tasks, and a few are broken down further into level 3 tasks.
