Assignment Task

Purpose

Enables students to demonstrate their ability to learn and work collaboratively. It will assess their understanding of the impact of colonisation and the activism and resistance by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, within a human rights framework and the implications for social work practice.

For this assessment students will demonstrate their ability to learn and work collaboratively. It will assess students’ understanding of the activism and resistance against colonisation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples using a human rights framework, Whiteness theory, and the implications for social work practice, informed by the Ngurra of Reflexive and Critical practice.

In assigned groups students will create a group presentation (video, live panel or PowerPoint presentation) discussing a key area of activism for the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Your presentation should include:

• Information about your activism topic ( Black Lives Matter ) and the impacts of colonisation it responds to
• Consideration of how whiteness maintains damaging colonial discourses about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• Use of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to challenge those deficit discourse and promote the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
• Understanding of how the Ngurra of Reflexive and Critical practice can subsequently inform your practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

The purpose of this assessment is for you to work with your peers to discuss and critically consider key topics in relation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
