Part

1. Last year, Australian people voted against an Aboriginal Voice to parliament. Reflect on what happened and how having a 'Voice' or not may or may not impact on the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Link this reflection to unit content in some way e.g. the impact of colonisation, Social and Emotional wellbeing, social determinants of health. Include some comment on your experiences or feelings about the Voice and if it is relevant to your practice as a nurse or midwife.

2. Reflect on an element of your own culture - think deeply about the origins of that tradition or belief or activity (reference) and what it means to you as well as what it may mean to others. Think of how you might feel (or consider the feelings of others experiences e.g migrants) if your health (or the health system) prevented you from participating or honoring that belief. Link this reflection to unit content. You MUST refer to the unit texts, videos or resources as background to your learning and be specific about which module, chapter or resource influenced your response. You also need to support your reflection using journal articles, books or audio-visual and media sources (think about the credibility of the source and make sure you acknowledge when bias may be present) that are not in the unit content but they must be able to be located via an active weblink and properly referenced. You do not need to use Gibbs reflective cycle or other frameworks for your writing. You should have at least part of your reflection written in FIRST person as I expect you to give some of you own experience and opinion. You do not need to reference your 'I' statements but there will be references in other content that helps you to support or challenge your ideas. Write approximately words for each part. Do not include an Introduction or Conclusion. Reflective Piece example. Scottish Football, Sectarianism and Wellbeing with Loss of Religion When I was twelve I relocated to Scotland with my mum and sister, where I remained for the next eight years. Both my parents were Scottish, as was the majority of my extended family.

Enculturation, as discussed by Darren Garvey in the Culture lecture, is when one discovers the requirements of fitting into a particular culture, and then adopting the suitable behaviours and values essential to survive in it (2023c). I slotted in to the Scottish way of life and even the accent as quickly as I possibly could due to not wanting to stand out in any way. Football/soccer was part of this culture (Heather, 2019). The two major football teams in Scotland are Celtic and Rangers. I found out quickly that Catholics generally support Celtic with acknowledgment to their Irish roots, while Protestants support Rangers and in large part British Unionism (Archer, 2022). As a Catholic whose family backed Celtic all the way, it was a given for me to follow suit. Ugly banter was commonplace between supporters of the two teams and no other rivalry I've witnessed in sport has ever come close to the derby known as the Old Firm (Archer, 2022). Police officers would stand on every step in a stadium separating the two teams' supporters, with very different entry and exit points to the games. Parking would even be separated. Sectarianism was real, as was the threat of injury or death for wearing the opposing teams attire in the ‘wrong' place (Picken, 2020). How much came down to actual religion and how much was simply passed down the generations as the ‘way it's done' is arguable. Regardless of this though, if a Catholic supporter of Celtic was told they could no longer associate with Catholicism in any way, they would be lost. Even if they don't regularly practice or go to Mass. It is a part of their identity. It's a part of my identity. I grew up in Catholic schools but do not practice.

My connection to Catholicism though is one of identity. Take that away and everything seems wrong. My Grandparents were strong parishioners and that devotion has been engrained in me. Biles and Biles (2019) discuss the differences between Western and Aboriginal peoples' health and well-being, with the latter dependent on family, spirituality and ancestors amongst other elements, yet not so much if at all in Western culture. I agree with this, particularly in the day to day, however I do believe there is still an element of that in my life. Family and ancestry is important to me.

The times in which I have travelled has shown me how lost I can be without it. While my example of soccer and sectarianism has highlighted major downfalls, it does show the passion that to this day grips the Scottish nation, with the Catholic church having a huge part to play. As I view this as part of my identity, part of my very being, to have a health system that didn't allow it would be both heartbreaking and confusing. A health system is after all meant to be for the betterment of health, not the detriment. Denying who I am at my core does very little to promote my well-being.
