Episode one of Redfern Now highlights the ideas of family connectedness, sacrifice and resilience of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The theme of mental health is prominent in this episode due to Lilly, she is a mother of two and suffers from Bipolar disorder. Through her disorder we are shown the way her son Tyler and her sister Grace present strong levels of family connectedness, sacrifice and resilience in the face of adversity.

Grace is willing to sacrifice a holiday to help support her sister in order to find a home so that social workers don’t remove the children. This resilience to keep the family together may be deeply rooted in the fear of government and stigma that is common to Aboriginal people due to the events of The Stolen Generation.

According to Read (2006) this removal of children meant that children were taken from their parents under unofficial powers until the establishment of the Aborigines protection Act of 1909.  This is no longer forcible due to the UN declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2018) however the psychological effects of the incident are still evident in today’s society through Graces desperate actions (Bushell & Stevens, 2000).

Futhermore, the family connectedness can be seen in the actions of Grace and Lillys children. Tyler shows protectiveness over his sister Maddi throughout the whole episode, he calls for Graces help to protect them against Lillys bipolar episode, whilst also attempting to calm Maddi. The children show respect and loyalty to Lilly although she does not treat them well because she is their mother, as seen when they find their way to the hospital to visit her.

This is contrast to Graces children who feel displeased that they had to help Lillys children and miss their holiday, they are said to be ungrateful and spoilt children by Grace. This lack of family values drives Grace away, as she has deep rooted values and does not feel appreciated. This is also evident when Grace moves in with the kids and they are read a story about family at the end of the episode, it shows she is trying to teach them the importance of family.

It is also significant to note that none of the family members that Grace reaches out to, seem to care about Lillys children needing a place to stay. This may be connected to the viewpoint that Lillys mental health problem isn’t considered a real illness; a common idea exhibited by Aboriginal and Torres Islander people.

As can be seen in Vicary and Westerman (2004) this may be a hinder in her treatment as they are taking a non-Aboriginal approach in the hospital. Graces resilience is evident as it was mentioned by other members of the community that they have dealt with Lilly’s breakdown multiple times; however, she still feels they shouldn’t give up on Lilly or her children.
