Highlights
Description of task:
An essay-style report about corporate accounting that must be your own original work. You must include appropriate in-text references and at the end of the essay a reference list (in the APA style).
Submission: The submission has to be made via the Turnitin submission link on iLearn, by the deadline. You can submit your essay ONCE only.
Topic of essay: During the Global Financial Crisis of 2008/9, it was claimed that IFRS fair value accounting techniques used in corporate reports had distorted financial reality and caused the crisis.
(a) Describe those alleged problematic fair value accounting techniques and standards, and state if you agree with the criticisms and why (10 marks).
(b) In the period 2009-2020, do you think IFRS fair value standards have improved? State your reasons and evidence (10 marks).
Note: ACCG3008 students may not be experts on fair value accounting, but there is so much material on this subject available (e.g., on the internet) at all levels, novice bystander explanations through to advanced professional, that you will have no trouble to understand the main issues.
Your awarded marks (out of 20) will be converted to your 7% ACCG3008 assessment mark later in the session.
Formatting and word limit
• You must upload your essay in a Microsoft Word or PDF file. You must upload your essay as ONE file only.
• DO NOT submit a different format – e.g. Apple Pages, compressed zip file, etc. The different formats will mess up the Turnitin process.
• The essay should have no more than 800 words. Your argument needs to be convincing, well justified, and concise and punchy. In each section, get straight to the point of the argument and do not waste space with ‘general background information’, etc.
• The word limit (800 words) does not include the reference list.
• You must not use appendices for any additional material that ‘did not fit in the word length.’
• You must not embed any scanned material.
• Do not use a cover sheet. Please put your full name and student ID on the top of the first page.
• Label each section clearly in your essay. Please use short headings such as Section (a) and Section (b).
• You must use Arial 12-point font with 1.15 line spacing and Microsoft Word ‘Normal’ margins.
• A 10% penalty applies to the awarded marks for failure to comply with any of the formatting and word limit requirements detailed above.
Answer to a question related to word limit:
Question: “Should I have separate Introduction and Conclusion?”
Answer: No. The word length (800 words) is too brief for including any Introduction and Conclusion. In essay-writing class you may have been taught to write proper introduction and conclusion. However, please ignore the introduction and conclusion for this short essay. Just get straight to the point on both sections of the essay.
Turnitin and WARNINGS about originality
Again, you must submit your ORIGINAL WORK. Your uploaded essay will be scanned by Turnitin for originality.
You should not include copied text from any sources, including internet sources, other students, or you own previous work (even from high school!).
DO NOT SUBMIT WORK YOU HAVE SUBMITTED BEFORE OR COPIED FROM ANYONE.
There are severe penalties for plagiarism (deliberate copying) and self plagiarism. Penalties for plagiarism could include zero marks for the assessment and escalation to the disciplinary committee.
Referencing
You should acknowledge all sources of material in an accepted academic manner. You need to paraphrase/rewrite and comment on others’ information and sentiments in your own words. Each statement, source, piece of information that is not your own must be identified throughout the essay and a reference must be provided. IT IS NOT SUFFICIENT JUST TO HAVE A LIST OF REFERENCES AT THE END OF THE ESSAY.
As an example, in the text you write:
At the end of the essay, you should prepare a reference list (providing full details of the references that you have used in the essay) in the APA style. Again, the reference list is not included in the word count. If you cite web-based material, please also include the URL/hyperlink.
Please refer to the specific referencing guide for APA 6th edition on the Macquarie University Library website Edition
Reminder: Appropriate referencing and proper and insightful use of references are necessary for receiving high marks. Students who provide inadequate, improper, or no references cannot expect to receive high marks (see marking criteria below).
Extensions and late penalty
No extensions will be granted. There will be a 10% penalty from the awarded mark for each 24-hour period or part thereof that the submission is late (for example, 25 hours late in submission – 20% penalty). This penalty does not apply for cases in which an application for Special Consideration is made and approved.
Answer to a question related to unavoidable disruptions
Question - “I worked really hard on my essay but just when I was going to spend a few days putting the finishing touches on it, I was sick. What should I do?”
Answer: There are some ‘do’s and a ‘don’t’ here:
• DO submit a formal request for Special Consideration, following the process outlined in the Special Consideration policy which is available here:
Your application is assessed centrally (i.e. not by me) and if it is approved, I then determine the appropriate response - e.g. by granting an extension.
• DO submit your application quickly – note that there is a time limit for applications.
• DO specify the unit, the assessment task and the length of the extension you are applying for. Bear in mind that extensions are almost never granted for periods longer than the period of the unavoidable disruptions (e.g., sickness). That is, if you have a medical certificate for three days you will only get a maximum three-day extension.
IMPORTANT
• Don’t wait to submit your essay assignment. There is a delay between your submitting the special consideration request and it being forwarded and processed by me, so do not wait to submit the assignment while you wait for the outcome for your special consideration application.
As noted above, if you are sick for three days before the submission date, even if your application is successful you will only receive a maximum of a three-day extension, but your application will almost certainly take longer than three days to process. Therefore, if you wait until you receive the official outcome to submit your essay, it will probably be late and late penalty will apply to your essay.
