Case Study: The following information is provided by Regis Healthcare Limited (Regis) website (https://www.Regis .com.au/investor-information/corporate-profile/): Regis was formed in the early 1990s and has grown from its original 104 places into one of the largest and most geographically diversified private residential aged care providers in Australia. Today Regis manages over 7,000 operational places across 63 homes primarily located in metropolitan areas across Australia. Assume that you have graduated from RMIT University and set up your own business – WeCare Consulting - a sustainability consulting firm specialising in the aged care sector. This business is the realisation of your business proposal generated when studying at RMIT after you have successfully completed several sustainability related courses. Using the proposal, you had won RMIT Business Model Award and gave a good impression to one of the industry panel judges Dr Kaushik Sridhar - Regis’ National Sustainability Manager. Kaushik subsequently introduced you to Regis who later engaged your consulting service by assigning three independent but related tasks to you. The three tasks are as follows. (Note: Regis is a real-life entity. All of your research, analysis, discussions and recommendations relating to this case study should be based on real world information and condition.) Task: 1 The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Managing Director (MD) Mr Ross Johnston has noticed an emerging and increasing trend of discussion about sustainability from businesses and some of Regis’ competitors are adopting various sustainability frameworks and practices. Although Regis is currently developing a sustainability framework and published its first Sustainability Report in 2018, Ross feels that there may be a potential advantage for further advancement in sustainability. He has asked you to conduct research and provide a formal business report to him, addressing the following questions.
  1. What is sustainability? Is the notion of sustainability relevant to business and accounting? Justify your answer
  2. Is the notion of sustainability relevant to the aged care industry in which Regis operates? Justify your answer.
  3. What are the specific (material) sustainability issues that Regis is facing? Justify your answer. Further develop a strategic materiality matrix for Regis to illustrate your findings.
  4. If sustainability is relevant to Regis, how might Regis embed sustainability in its operations and corporate activities? Justify your recommendations.
Task: 2 Assume the CEO is satisfied with your report (Assignment One) and within Assignment One you have recommended Regis to produce sustainability reports to external stakeholders. To follow up, the CEO asks you to complete a second business report to address his following requirements.
  1. Why should Regis provide sustainability report?
  2. To whom should these reports be addressed?
  3. What information should be reported?
  4. How should the information be reported?
  5. Provide a sample Sustainability Report for 2019.
Within the report, the CEO also asks you to apply one theory into your discussion to explain and justify your recommendations as to why, to whom, what and how information should be reported (the first four questions) in the sample 2019 report. Task: 3 Assuming the CEO is satisfied with both of your reports (Assignment One and Two), you are now required to formulate a Sustainability Balanced Scorecard (SBSC) to explicitly translate Regis’ strategy into a set of financial and non- financial performance measures, covering a range of perspectives. You are asked to present and discuss a suitable SBSC, using a business report format. In completing your business report, please address the following questions:
  1. Briefly outline what a “strategic map” is and then develop a map for Regis? Please put a specific focus on its sustainability objectives and motivate your objectives’ formulation concerning Regis.
  2. From the strategic map, you should be able to provide a Sustainable
Balanced Scorecard to Regis:
  1. Choose one of the three approaches to the development of a Sustainable Balanced Scorecard (Topic 9) and explain your choice with reference to Regis.
  2. Once you have chosen the approach to the development of a SBSC (point a), show your classification of the strategic objectives (point 1) into the perspectives of your suggested SBSC. Please justify your classification with specific reference to the sustainability objectives.
  3. For each sustainability objective (b) identify one or more suitable/reasonable indicators through which you would advise to measure the fulfilment of the objective. Justify your choice of indicator/s. That is, how do you know that the chosen indicators can capture and measure the targeted objectives?
  4. Identify and explain the eventual impact/s of the indicator/s you have chosen with reference to the sustainability objectives of your suggested SBSC onto the organisation’s decision making.
Within the report you should provide at least the following figures: a strategic map for Regis and a SBSC. Task: 4 Now you have completed the course and it is time to reflect on your learning experience and plan to apply your learning to your future professional practice. You are required to write an academic reflection paper on a significant new insight you have gained through learning. Please address the following questions:
  1. What did you learn? Identify the significant insight you have gained.
Only choose one insight from one of the learning activities:
  • reading course materials;
  • completing the case study assignments;
  • participating in class activities;
  • participating the guest lectures; or
  • interacting with the guest industry experts.
  1. What happened? Describe the specific situation/experience/thoughts.
  1. What might it mean? Interpret the meaning and implications of the insight.
  1. How is this insight useful for your understanding of the topic? Evaluate the insights to your learning.
  1. How might this learning apply to your future? Outline your applications of the learning to your future professional practice (and maybe personal value/life).
