Assignment Task:

Choice of organisation

The major project is a Work-Integrated-Learning (WIL) activity in which students focus on investigating, evaluating and reporting (both in written and spoken form) on an organisation of their choice and the industry/sector in which the organisation competes.

Students are required to contact and get access to the organization you wish to analyze for the WIL project. Before you can start working on your WIL plan, you need to communicate with course coordinator for the approval of the selected organization. It is suggested that you should notify and get approval from course coordinator your choice of the organisation by the end of Week 4.

The organisation you choose should be not too large and not too small. Organisations such as BHP or the National Australia Bank are too large to examine and have too many departments and different businesses making it difficult for you to easily address the requirements of the assignment.

On the other hand, a local café or restaurant is likely to be too small and have little, if any, formal accounting systems for you to examine.

The organisation, therefore, should be medium-sized and potentially have need for more formal planning and accounting information. Access to these sized firms is relatively easier than larger organisations. Examples of organisations selected by students in former semesters include:

  • Corporate Locksmiths,

  • Notepad Manufacturers,

  • HRL Developments,

  • Brunetti’s,

  • a branch of Priceline Pharmacy,

  • the glass packaging branch of Orora Limited,

  • Designer Doorware, etc.

Public organisations (e.g. museums, hospitals, libraries, etc.) and not-for-profit organizations can also be considered for this assessment. Examples of organisations selected by students in former semesters include:

  • Melbourne Arts Centre,

  • RMIT library,

  • RMIT Engineering Department,

  • a Department of Melbourne Water Corp,

  • Richmond multi-culture childcare centre, etc.

Give some thought to how, when and who you approach in the organisation to obtain permission to undertake this project. As part of your dialogue, you should emphasise that you do NOT need or seek any confidential information or actual financial data.

Part 1. Industry Analysis (15 marks – maximum length 1,500 words)

Before undertaking this assignment, you should ensure you have read Chapters 1 and 2 from Ward (see course references). Pay particular attention to discussion of Porter’s (1980, 1985) “Five-forces” model of industry competition and generic strategies for strategic competitive advantage.

  1. Choose an organisation/firm to investigate and briefly describe the industry within which it operates.

  2. Analyse and report on the competitiveness of the industry using Porter’s five-forces model.

  3. Identify the current competitive strategy (low cost or differentiation) and the target market (broad or niche) that you think your chosen firm is following. Give your opinion on the suitability of the firm’s choice of competitive strategy in the light of your analysis in Part 1 (b).

Part 2. Site Visit and Company Report (25 marks – maximum length 3,000 words)

The broad aim of this part is for you to think about what type of management accounting information (that you have studied this semester) is used or could be used to assist management decision-making in your chosen organisation. In considering management accounting tools/techniques/methods, you should reflect on a number of factors including how the firm is competing, the size of the business, the main activities of the business, the resources and/or the ability of managers to effectively utilise management accounting information.

Required:

  1. Identify, describe and document the key activities involved in producing the organisation’s main product(s) (either good(s) or a service(s)). The activities should not be limited to the physical production, but should also include those activities that straddle the extended value chain of the business.

  2. Describe and discuss how effectively the following aspects of management accounting are utilised at your organisation:

  3. Performance measures (such as those in the four perspectives of the balanced-scorecard) – how does the organisation measure performance of its primary (value-chain) activities?
  4. Product/service costing – how is the product costed and overheads applied? How does the organisation identify direct and indirect costs?
  5. Cost-volume-profit analysis – how (if at all) does the organisation work out break-even point?
  6. Budgeting – how, why and when is budgeting used?
  7. Information systems overview – how are they designed (i.e. type of tools for management data collection and elaboration used) and how do they support the management accounting?
  8. Sustainability – how does the organisation take into account issues of social and environmental performance?
