Task: Design Elements and Principles

STEP ONE:
Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of a range of Design Elements and Principles and Gestalt Laws. Using the idea of bugs as a theme, students are required to represent 8 design elements and principles. Your bug images need to vary in medium and design so consider using ink, pencil, markers, paint, and paper. Some may be simple illustrations or mark-making while others need to be more complex. A high standard of finish is critical. Only black and white may be used. Research
bugs on the internet and explores mediums and methods of representing realistic and abstract bug images.

STEP TWO:
Start with simple textural, exploratory and playful mark-making methods as well as drawing in traditional methods and calculated ways.

STEP THREE:
Scan your mark-making exercises and crop, scale and design with the black on white creations to construct designs satisfying specific design elements and principles. Critically analyze each of your mark-making and drawings to see which ones can be turned into bugs. Make sure you leave enough room around your mark-making to ensure you can easily crop out your design or take sections to suit your design principle. Each finished square must be 8 X 8cms square.

You are required to submit 3 documents:
1. Your final design with 8 bug images positioned an A3 landscape page.
2. A multipage PDF document of all backs up work and support material that has led you to your final design.
3. Complete a page as per the page following demonstrating your understanding of the design elements and principles evident in your submission.
