Highlights
Task:
Give a clear and thorough analysis of the reading: Multi-local Livelihoods, Climate Change and Urban Vulnerability, by Caitlin Blaser Mapitsa.
Your analysis will consist of the following:
INTRO – 10 to 15 lines
The 3 terms are:
Multi-local Livelihoods
Climate Change
Urban Vulnerability
Each concept is defined and explained in the text – from the executive summary onwards. You can also look at the 4 examples because they illustrate these concepts.
And then I ask you to tell me why these concepts need to be addressed in SA – what is it about SA that makes this study valid.
The general challenge here: To define and explain the concepts as clearly as possible, and in your own words.
The special requirement: The personal reason you give (but still relative to the study) of what makes this study valid. Short, clear and precise.
‘In my opinion, this is a valid study because…’ OR ‘I believe that in South Africa, this could be an important study because…’.
PARAGRAPH 1 – ABOUT18 TO 20 LINES
For each of the 4 boxes (where specific testimonials are given to illustrate the main concepts), say BRIEFLY:
The testimonials are similar – but each is unique. So, you need to contrast them and find the specific detail(s) for each ‘Box’.
The general challenge here: DO NOT tell the whole story of what each ‘Box’ says. That is just repeating the text.
You need to read each box enough times to really understand what is being said. Tell yourself that there IS something different to find in each of the 4 testimonial boxes. Identify that something different and then put it in your essay.
You will be heavily penalized if you just repeat the text.
Your personal opinion should be informed by your own life experience as it relates to the issues in the reading.
PARAGRAPH 2 – 5 to 10 lines
FYI – I have attached a 2-page text on SDG 11. Identify where the SDG is mentioned in your essay reading. Then read the extra info [only if you feel you need it].
For your paragraph, think specifically about your own life experience – only in the context of what the study is dealing with. What do you personally know that can add to the importance and urgency of achieving SDG 11.
The general challenge here: DO NOT turn this paragraph into a mini-essay on the 17 SDGs. That is really not what you are asked to talk about. Simply look at the aim of SDG 11, look at the 4 boxes again, and then talk briefly about your personal experience of some of these things – either directly or indirectly. What you want to say in this section is how you, personally, have experienced some elements of what the study is revealing.
Please do not give more than 3 examples of this impact.
PARAGRAPH 3 – 15 to 18 lines
Covid19 and the added pressure on the elements of the study.
The challenge here: You may feel that this paragraph is very difficult. You may wish for – and try to find – something on the web that will just give you a neat answer. Don’t do that. Really. Because there really isn’t 1 model answer for this. This paragraph is looking at your ability to evaluate a situation we are all going through, a situation which has impacted heavily on everyone’s life, in the whole world. And then write about 2 or 3 examples where you add a Covid-19 impact ona study that was undertaken before the pandemic.
I will leave this conclusion up to you. IF you work systematically through all the sections leading to the conclusion, it will be fairly straightforward for you to give an appropriate ending to what you have said.
Take full advantage of this opportunity to do a draft – and do it as thoroughly as you can. That will allow the feedback comments to be precise and useful for making corrections.
IT IS IMPORTANT that your essay has been spell-checked and thoroughly proofread.
