2. A first paragraph where you briefly examine each of the 4 vignettes – or mini testimonies. In chronological order, from Box 1 to Box 4, and in no more than 3 sentences per vignette, explain how each account adds a specific perspective to the overall picture presented by the study.

 

PARAGRAPH 1 – ABOUT18 TO 20 LINES

For each of the 4 boxes (where specific testimonials are given to illustrate the main concepts), say BRIEFLY:

• Who the testimonial is from;
• The specific circumstances which make that testimonial important in the context of the study.

The testimonials are similar – but each is unique. So, you need to contrast them and find the specific detail(s) for each ‘Box’.

 

The general challenge here: DO NOT tell the whole story of what each ‘Box’ says. That is just repeating the text.

You need to read each box enough times to really understand what is being said. Tell yourself that there IS something different to find in each of the 4 testimonial boxes. Identify that something different and then put it in your essay.

You will be heavily penalized if you just repeat the text.

 

3. A second paragraph where you give a personal opinion on the usefulness of this study within the bigger context of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 11. [If you do not know about these SDGs you may of course briefly look them up – but please do not quote any text other than the reading you have been given and consider SDG 11 as it is defined in the reading].

 

Your personal opinion should be informed by your own life experience as it relates to the issues in the reading.

 

PARAGRAPH 2 – 5 to 10 lines

FYI – I have attached a 2-page text on SDG 11. Identify where the SDG is mentioned in your essay reading. Then read the extra info [only if you feel you need it].

For your paragraph, think specifically about your own life experience – only in the context of what the study is dealing with. What do you personally know that can add to the importance and urgency of achieving SDG 11.

 

The general challenge here: DO NOT turn this paragraph into a mini-essay on the 17 SDGs. That is really not what you are asked to talk about. Simply look at the aim of SDG 11, look at the 4 boxes again, and then talk briefly about your personal experience of some of these things – either directly or indirectly. What you want to say in this section is how you, personally, have experienced some elements of what the study is revealing.

 

4. A final paragraph where you describe how Covid-19 restrictions impact on an already over-burdened population as shown in the 4 vignettes.

Please do not give more than 3 examples of this impact.

 

PARAGRAPH 3 – 15 to 18 lines

Covid19 and the added pressure on the elements of the study.

 

The challenge here: You may feel that this paragraph is very difficult. You may wish for – and try to find – something on the web that will just give you a neat answer. Don’t do that. Really. Because there really isn’t 1 model answer for this. This paragraph is looking at your ability to evaluate a situation we are all going through, a situation which has impacted heavily on everyone’s life, in the whole world. And then write about 2 or 3 examples where you add a Covid-19 impact ona study that was undertaken before the pandemic.

 

5. A conclusion where you state whether the text is a credible study or not. Justify your opinion.

 

I will leave this conclusion up to you. IF you work systematically through all the sections leading to the conclusion, it will be fairly straightforward for you to give an appropriate ending to what you have said.
