Tool 1 - Customer Scenarios 

Instructions to the Student

Students are required to research and provide information for each of the customer scenarios below.  Scenarios are to be submitted in written form and no longer than two pages for each scenario.  You may use pictures to help illustrate your ideas.  Each scenario should be addressed using the exact points below.  These scenarios will be used for your client role plays in Tool 2.

1. What species of fish are you recommending for this client?  You will need to take into consideration and discuss the following:

1. Discuss why you think the fish chosen are suited to the customer scenario

2. Discus compatibility with other fish and why they are suited to each other

3. Size of the tank

4. How many fish can they keep in this size tank

5. What sexes they will keep

6. Explain appropriate housing and environmental requirements for the species chosen.  You may need to discuss the following:

7. Special housing requirements. I.e. hides, plants, substrates etc.

8. Explain the tank set up. You may like to include a diagram.

9. How the fish should be introduced to the new tank.  Include any special handling requirements.

10. Outline the additional aquatic support systems including the following:

11. Filtration, pumps, heating and lighting types and instructions how and where in the tank to set these items up.

12. Describe any additional support for the tank.  This may include water flow devices, air stones etc.

13. Describe the cleaning and maintenance of the aquatic system including:

• Water and filtration cleaning

• Chemical Testing

• How will you dispose of water keeping sustainability in mind?  

• Any specialised cleaning products that can be used?

4. You will need to describe nutritional, and health support for the species of fish chosen including the following points:

1. Food type, amount and how often to feed.

2. How to feed.  Discuss any specialised feeding adaptations of the fish housed. 

3. Common health ailments of the species chosen

4. Medications to keep on hand

Tool 1 - Customer Scenarios 

Scenario 1 - Goldfish

Maud has come into your shop and would like to know more about keeping Goldfish.  She has not kept fish before and her friend has given her a tank.  The tank is 100cm Long x 50cm Wide x 50cm High.  Maud likes the fancy types of Goldfish, and would like to keep a few different ones together.

Scenario 2 - Cichlids

Dave would like to start keeping Cichlids and wants some information.  He has kept tropical fish before.  Dave already has a large tank 200cm Long x 50cm Wide x 80cm High, and would like to keep a few different types of Cichlids together for a more visual display of colour.

Scenario 3 – Tropical 

Deb already has a tropical fish tank with 2 x Clown Loaches and a Bristle Nose Catfish.  She would like to add some colour and movement to her tank.  Her tank measures 150cm Long x 60cm Wide x 70cm High.
