6.1 Action Research

This AR project is specific to the organisation’s post-production context, and has intended to solve the identified issues, rather than solely create universal knowledge (Coughlan & Coghlan, 2002). However, it could inform similar situations (ibid.). This project has demonstrated that an insider can apply theory to their tacit knowledge, secondary data, and specific situation to find solutions to improvements in a short period of time. Each of these elements were crucial to reach the final proposed solutions. As an insider, contextual knowledge of the issues was clear, and the theory provided a path to resolutions. 

AR’s cyclical nature provided a practical way to build the action and reflect upon the research as it progressed. This approach encouraged continual reflection upon the data collected, theory, and issues to determine the best way forward. As an insider, this inquiry was both outward and inward: I looked outwardly at what was going on in the process and the roles, and inwardly at my own interpretations and how I was undertaking the process (Coughlan & Coghlan, 2002). I have continually reflected upon how I have planned the action, researched, and determined the solutions, to reach the final proposed procedure and implementation plan.

6.2 Project reflection

When this project began, I believed that the main issue was a lack of documented process. However, as I considered the issues, I realised that the PPM and MA roles were inefficient, isolated, and therefore another issue. This understanding shaped the project and research, and led to the key solution of bringing the PPM into the MT. 

The literature review was time consuming, however I was prepared, as I knew that reading and critically reviewing literature would take time. The methodology was my biggest challenge, as it is not something I have done before. This was frustrating and took more time than I had anticipated, however, once understood, and completed, I appreciated its structured, tailored, and pragmatic addition to the project.

6.3 Project improvements

There were limitations related to researcher and data bias, stakeholder input and data availability. Improvements for future projects are undertaking primary research and involving stakeholders in the AR process. By undertaking primary research, the data collected would be for the research only, and therefore specifically related to the issues. However, the data collected can bring bias from those collecting it. Involving stakeholders could therefore improve researcher bias and the interpretation of the issues and data collected, by bringing multiple opinions and interpretations to the issues and data. Finding more case studies and similar processes related to the project is not possible if the data does not exist, however, with primary data collection, the researcher(s) could request processes for comparison from similar organisations. 

6.4 Support and stakeholders

The project was well received and supported by the SPM and MTM when proposed. This reflected the necessity of the project, and an understanding of the issues occurring. This support provided a positive grounding for the project; I felt clear that I was undertaking a meaningful project, and therefore wanted to determine useful solutions to the issues. This has identified the importance of providing a clear justification for future projects and gaining crucial support at the outset. 

6.5.1 Strengths and weaknesses

This assessment suggests that I interpret my main strengths as independence, commitment and resilience. When I first took the assessment, I interpreted leadership, seeking opportunities and creative problem solving as weaknesses. However, this project has identified that these are strengths which I have been able to build. I have sought an opportunity, and creatively found solutions for the issues I identified. As the sole researcher I have led the project, and throughout implementation I will continue to lead.

This project has therefore provided the opportunities for me to change weaknesses into strengths. Phases 2 and 3 will provide an opportunity for me to improve my networking and self-confidence weaknesses: as I have undertaken this groundwork phase, I will require the confidence to present my work, network with my colleagues to improve and implement it, and lead the implementation. Additionally, by becoming part of the MT, my independence strength and networking weakness may become better balanced by working more cohesively as part of a team. Once Phase 3 is complete, I will return to the assessment to determine whether my weaknesses have again improved.

6.5.2 Personal Development Plan

Figure 32 provides a high-level Personal Development Plan (PDP), to develop the strengths and address the weaknesses identified. Middleton (2007) identified diverse networking, going beyond your role’s remit, and seeking creative challenges as key to career progression, which correlate with some of the entrepreneurial skills, traits and behaviours. This PDP therefore seeks to develop my entrepreneurial weaknesses as identified in the skills assessment, and my overall development.
