In considering core philosophical perspectives from Brazilian educator Paulo Freire (1972, 1994, 2014) and US American feminist scholar bell hooks (1984, 1994, 2004), this desk-based philosophical inquiry examines the relevance and applicability of fundamental concepts from these theorists regarding processes of politicisation, social marginalisation, and transgression. Additionally, by incorporating Cooper and Whyte’s (2017) notion of ‘the violence of austerity’ and informed by historical parallels from the South Wales Association of Tenants (1979-82), this dissertation critically analyses the socio- political context in which the thirteen women and their thirty-five children who came to form the social activist collective All About Me faced eviction as a direct consequence of welfare reform under Conservative and Unionist Party-led austerity at U.K. Government-level.

Aided by experienced social activists from the local area including North Edinburgh Fights Back - ‘a local community group campaigning against the cuts in North Edinburgh’ (North Edinburgh News, 2011) - these thirteen women banded together to publicise their struggle as a result of reform to Housing Benefit and the introduction of the Benefits Cap. By becoming politically conscious and forming the social activist group All About Me, these women demonstrated collective resistance to the everyday violence of welfare reform in their pursuit of social justice. This dissertation therefore considers the socio-historical context of
Greater Pilton and seeks to understand the broader significance of All About Me’s acts of defiance in challenging contemporary austerity at Local Authority, - Scottish Government - and by-proxy U.K. Government levels, as these activists called for authorities to ‘fully mitigate the Benefit Cap’ and ‘to end this suffering’ (Edinburgh Coalition Against Poverty, 2018).
