Assignment Task -

Why
The development of good multiple choice exam items is challenging and requires a deep understanding of content.

This assessment design for health students has been used successfully in a variety of courses -

included health related courses.

As explained by Nicol (2007), when a teacher sets an MCQ exam, 'the students’ role is merely to respond by selecting an answer: they don’t actively construct answers' (p60). It is the active construction of knowledge and information that is a principle of this curriculum, a standard approach in Universities, and exactly what will be required of you as a registered nurse.

Details please!
For this assessment task, you must write four short multiple-choice tests (TWO questions each).

Each test will be based on clinical scenarios that you will create, relating to each of the following conditions:

  • Acute Myocardial Infarction
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Asthma
  • Post-operative complication (post-operative bleed or opioid overdose)
  • The scenarios must be fictional, and must include:
  • Patient name
  • Patient age
  • Presenting symptoms (one sentence)
  • History of presentation (one sentence on what events preceded the current presentation)
  • Short medical history (2 conditions)
  • A full set of observations

You are then required to write TWO multiple-choice question items in relation to the presenting scenario.

These must include:

  • ONE item about expected symptoms
  • ONE item about expected interventions
  • Each item is to have a question, one key (correct answer) and three distractors (incorrect answers).
  • At the end of each item, a summary with reference to the weekly readings must explain why each key is right and why each distractor is wrong.
  • Word count: Aim for 2000 words. Any assessment over 2500 words (not including references) will lose marks. Quality case studies and questions in an exam are succinct.
