Executive Summary
Engineers play a significant role in shaping the built environment and impacting the natural environment through the design and implementation of infrastructure and technology. The influence of engineers can either positively or negatively affect the environment, depending on the ethical and sustainable considerations that are integrated into their design and decision-making processes. Engineering projects that promote sustainability and minimize environmental harm are essential in addressing global challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and habitat destruction. On the other hand, poorly planned and executed projects can lead to ecological degradation, habitat loss, and other negative consequences. Therefore, it is important for engineers to adopt a systems-thinking approach, consider the lifecycle impacts of their designs, and integrate environmentally sound principles into their work.
In this study, Tarkett Group – a leading global manufacturer and provider of flooring and sports surfaces solutions is used as a case study. The company is committed to environmental sustainability and has implemented a number of initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint and minimize the impact of its operations on the environment. This includes reducing energy consumption, waste, and water usage in its production processes and promoting the use of environmentally friendly materials in its products. Tarkett also supports sustainable development and sustainable use of resources through partnerships and collaborations with stakeholders, and by encouraging sustainable practices in its supply chain. By prioritizing environmental sustainability, Tarkett is positioning itself as a leader in the flooring industry and contributing to a more sustainable future.
Introduction
The idea of engineering has been around since people first created basic devices like the wheel, pulley, and lever. Each of these innovations adheres to the contemporary notion of engineering, making use of fundamental mechanical concepts to create practical tools and objects (Dixit et al., 2017). Engineering has a long and rich history dating back to ancient civilizations such as the Greeks, Romans, and Egyptians. These civilizations made significant contributions to the fields of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering through their innovations in construction, machinery, and electricity (Hosseiny et al., 2021). During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, engineering played a major role in transforming traditional manufacturing processes and facilitating the growth of new industries. In the 20th century, engineering continued to advance with the advent of new technologies, including the development of computers, the Internet, and space travel (Pereira & Romero, 2017). Today, engineering continues to be a crucial field in shaping our modern world and improving our standard of living.
The world has been constantly evolving right from time and underwent a tremendous transformation, thanks to Engineers. When describing the modern world today, the role of engineers cannot be overstated. Engineers’ roles have equally evolved over time. From the Iron Age to the present day, Engineers worked really hard to make life easier for people by developing tools for farming and hunting as well as building roads, bridges, transportation systems and other types of infrastructure (Van der Merwe & Scully, 1971). They use their technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and creativity to design and develop products, systems, and infrastructure that makes our lives easier, safer, and more efficient (Stouffer & Russell, 2004).
In the twentieth century, there had been a turning point in the field of engineering where the incessant infrastructural development needed to be checkmate due to some significant structural failures, including some dramatic bridge collapses, remarkably, the Quebec Bridge collapse of 1907, the Tay Bridge Disaster of 1879, and the Ashtabula River Railroad Disaster (1876). These significantly impacted engineers and made it necessary for the field to address ethical standard flaws in technical as well as construction practice (Layton, 1986). Three of the four founding engineering societies responded by creating official codes of ethics. In 1912, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) adopted theirs. In 1914, The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) followed suit. These bridge collapses, along with the Boston Molasses Disaster (1919), raised concerns about professional practice and public safety, which sparked another movement that had been going on for a while: the requirement of formal credentials such as Professional Engineering licensure both in the US and around the globe as a prerequisite to practice. This entails fulfilling a set of criteria that may include tests experience, and educational requirements (Layton, 1986).
The demand for engineers to demonstrate their knowledge of ethical professional practice has recently been accompanied by growing concerns about the environmental challenges posed by the activities of the Engineers. As urban populations grow, engineers are faced with the challenge of meeting the increasing demand for infrastructure, housing, and services while also protecting the environment, the environment being the primary source of materials suffers a great deal. This requires the development of innovative solutions that are sustainable, efficient, and economically viable (Cruickshank & Fenner, 2007). However, the pressure to provide resources quickly and at a low cost can sometimes lead to the neglect of environmental considerations, which can result in negative impacts on air and water quality, land use, and natural habitats (Van den Bergh, 2007). In recent decades, there has been growing recognition of the importance of sustainability and environmental stewardship in the evolution of Engineering as a field. Engineers from different industries are working hard to reduce their carbon footprints, conserve energy and resources, and promote sustainable transportation and land use practices (Hall et al., 2010). This is leading to the development of "smart" cities that use advanced technologies to manage and optimize their operations and systems, from energy generation and transportation to waste management and water supply.
In this essay, using Tarkett Group - a multinational flooring company as a case study, we will explore the role of engineers in promoting sustainability and protecting the environment, as well as the responsibilities they have to ensure their work aligns with environmental goals. Through examining past and present initiatives and technologies, we will see how engineers are working to create a more sustainable future for all. But let us first understand how the environment and Engineers interact.
