You are one of four administrative assistants working in your organisation’s administration section under an Administration Coordinator. Over the last few months, the Administration Coordinator has often been late for work and has left early due to some “personal” issues. Your Administration Coordinator used to be focused, up to date and worked well with the group but recently has not been as proactive or productive. Up to now, Management has not noticed as the team has managed to produce the work required, however, this is taking its toll on the team and motivation and morale is low. Some of your colleagues have quietly mentioned that if it continues, they may look for an internal transfer to another section or a new job altogether. The Administration Coordinator has become a friend through work but has not confided what the issues are to you despite you asking or offering to help.

Your Administration Coordinator has been asked to produce reports for Management by 4.30 pm for a 5.00 pm meeting. It is now 2.30 pm and your Administration Coordinator has just handed the task to the team before leaving for the day to attend to another personal issue. Your team has not had much experience with the reporting function and are concerned that the reports may not be completed properly or on time. The Administration Coordinator did not have time to cover how to do the reports and just asked you all to do your best. When you check how much work is involved, you realize the reports are only half-completed despite the Administration Coordinator working on them all day.
