Highlights
For the purpose of this task you are required to write a 2,300 word essay on adolescent learning and development, analysing and discussing your choice of ONE teaching scenario out of the three options that are provided in the subject materials. Once you have decided on the scenario you will analyse and discuss in your essay, you will make notes from your subject readings regarding what you know about theories of development and learning in adolescence, identifying relevant links to the physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics of students in the chosen scenario. You will need to consult your subject readings regarding factors that are evidenced to impact on adolescent learning, motivation and achievement in the classroom.
Scenario One
Your Year 11 class is consistently performing below the standard of other classes in the year. There are some students in this group who have communicated to you that they enjoy this subject and they are keen to do well. However, you observe that some students appear to be disengaged from the learning process and are often wasting time in class and underachieving. There are also some students in your class who have seem to have problems retaining information and/or following instructions. They rarely contribute to your lessons in a constructive way and they can be particularly disruptive during class time.
Scenario Two
You have a Year 9 class with a significant number of students who exhibit low confidence in their academic ability; this student group includes a “core group” of students who disrupt lessons by “clowning around”; these particular students avoid completing set tasks, demonstrate consistent poor focus in your classroom and at least two of these students frequently skip classes. You have attempted to contact the parent/s or caregivers of the students you have concerns about, without success. There are also a small group of refugee students in this class who are new to the school and are keen to learn but seem overwhelmed with the frequent noise and disruption in the classroom.
