Purpose of study

This unit of study aims to expand the student’s undergraduate understanding of applied clinical physiology to that of an advanced level. This is achieved through the linking of complex theoretical concepts to clinical practice by utilisation of diverse clinical case scenarios. The students are required to analyse, rationalise and evaluate normal versus abnormal physiology and validate patient management in light of findings. This unit of study provides a strong foundational platform for students wishing to explore specialised contents in nursing.

Short answer discussion - Homeostasis

The aim of this assessment is to foster your active engagement with the course content and deepen your understanding of the unit’s context. It will also serve as a valuable tool to help you assimilate and interpret the content material, enabling you to effectively apply and integrate these key concepts and principles into your clinical practice. The purpose of this assessment is to facilitate the understanding of the principles of homeostasis in the human body.

Read the supplied case study ‘Betty’ and answer the following questions regarding her presentation. You will find the case study scenario at the end of Topic 3 - Homeostasis, in Theme 1 of your unit. Answer the following questions below with accompanying references to support your discussion.

• Discuss homeostasis in the context of the human body and how it relates to the symptoms and conditions experienced by Betty.
• Based on Betty’s presentation and medical history, identify two (2) key challenges in maintaining her homeostatic balance
• Discuss the potential interventions that would be beneficial for supporting Betty’s homeostasis during her hospital stay

Essay - Cellular metabolism, respiratory and haemodynamic disorder

The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of changes in cell metabolism secondary to critical disruption in glucose and oxygen supply during a metabolic disorder.

The discussion will focus on the systematic impact of these changes and their relationship to human pathophysiology. Two case studies from your learning guide will be used to contextualise the clinical situation and guide your discussion. Please complete parts A and B. Part A refers to the case study ‘Rebecca’ and part B refers to the case study ‘Manny’.

Part A

After reading Rebecca’s presentation, answer the following:

• Discuss the mechanisms of glucose metabolism and its chemical transformations within the cell. Highlight the key processes and the energy yield in each stage of metabolism.
• Analyse the basis of Rebecca’s cellular metabolism dysfunction and discuss the systemic impact of her acidosis and its associated clinical signs and symptoms.
• Explain the rationale for providing the clinical interventions for Rebecca’s situation. What are the other potential management for Rebecca’s underlying acidosis and its symptoms?

Part B

After reading Manny’s presentation, answer the following:

• After reviewing and analysing Manny’s ABG results, discuss how decreased oxygen levels affect cellular energy production and homeostasis.
• Explain the cellular and systemic effects of respiratory acid/base imbalance in the context of neurological, cardiovascular, muscular, renal and respiratory systems. Discuss these effects in relation to Manny’s current health presentation.
• Analyse the compensatory mechanisms needed to reset Manny’s Unit Outline V4 Jan 2024 10 metabolic parameters and discuss any short-term and long-term effects of the compensation to his current condition.

The purpose of this assessment is to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of complex pathophysiology related to a patient presenting with a significant immune disorder and interaction with other conditions. This assessment will enable you to explore the concepts of immune dysfunction, stress response and the associated clinical signs and symptoms.

Review the supplied case scenario ‘Joshua’ to assist in completing this assessment. Complete the concept map and the three-part discussion paper to support your content.

This assessment is divided into two (2) parts:

• 3a Concept map (approximately words)
• 3b Case discussion (approximately words, 3 parts)

Your concept map should include at least three (3) layers of concepts that showcase your case discussion. A bibliography will need to be included as part of your concept map. Present your bibliography in the lower section of your concept map submission. You are expected to include the resources from your bibliography in your case discussion reference list. • Given Joshua's dual diagnosis of ALL and COVID-19, analyse pharmacotherapy utilised in managing the systemic effects of his disorders, especially focusing on the cardiovascular, respiratory, and neuroendocrine systems. How are these management tailored to his unique clinical situation?

Part B

• Discuss the phases of the general adaptation syndrome (stress response) in the context of Joshua's condition. • Considering Joshua's ALL diagnosis, discuss the immunological aspects and cellular changes associated with this type of leukemia. How does this immune response disorder potentially become exacerbated with the complications presented by the COVID-19 infection?

Part C

• Discuss and analyse the systemic effects Joshua might encounter as his immune system disorder progresses from an acute phase, exacerbated by COVID-19, to a chronic phase due to his underlying leukemia.
• Justify the management approach taken for Joshua's systemic complications, given his chronic immune system disorder (ALL) compounded by an acute viral infection (COVID-19). What considerations are essential in ensuring both immediate relief and long-term care for him?
