1. Model the frame using the STRAND-7 software. Use “Beam2” elements for the members. For the first model do not subdivide the beam or the column elements. Determine the following:
a. Determine the first 10 natural frequencies and modal shapes for the structure.

b. Perform a Harmonic response analysis of the structure. For the harmonic response analysis apply a base acceleration of (2.2905) ms-2 to the structure and use modal damping, with a damping ratio of 0.05. Determine the frequency which will give the maximum horizontal deflection at the top of the structure. Report both the frequency and corresponding displacement in your report, and also give a snapshot Figure of the displacement vs natural frequency graph from STRAND-7. The total mass participation should be greater than 90%, which you can see in the log file of the harmonic response analysis (present the snapshot of this from STRAND-7 in the report). If the total mass participation is lower than 90 % then you will need to increase the number of modes solved for in the Natural frequency analysis and do the harmonic response analysis again. Report your final value for the total mass participation in your report, and also the number of modes that were required to achieve this value.

2. Create a new model by subdividing the beam and column elements by 5 to refine the mesh. Redo parts (a) and (b) from Q1 for your new model. Compare the results of this new model (with the refined mesh) to the model results from Q1 (with the coarser mesh).

3. For the model in Q2, suggest a possible method for reducing the maximum lateral displacement of the frame in the x-direction. Develop a finite element model, and
redo parts (a) and (b) from Q1 (above) for your new structures. Present all of your results and report the % decrease in the maximum horizontal displacement.

Hints:
