Highlights
Critical reflection has become an integral part of healthcare offering numerous advantages to patients, nurses and the nursing profession in general. Structured reflection assists nurses in gaining clinical competence with the ability to anticipate problems and solve complex nursing situations (Sumner, 2010). In fact, thinking critically promotes learning from experience and understanding of self, thereby enhancing the quality of patient care. Usher and Holmes (2014) state that care outcomes are optimised by drawing on reflective thinking, for it renders nurses sensitive to the health needs of vulnerable populations such as the intellectually disabled and ethnic and religious minorities. On the other hand, failure to engage in critical reflection could impact negatively on nursing practice. Andre and Heartfield (2015) claim that disregarding reflection could lead to inadequate solutions, loss of time and resources and lack of productivity in healthcare. From the evidence presented, the benefits of critical reflection for nursing practice are obvious. Most importantly, the registered nurse standards for practice outline that it is mandatory for nurses and midwives to demonstrate that they have been engaging in reflective practice, if they wish to maintain their nursing registration. This requirement is stipulated in standard one of the registration standards which outlines reflecting on practice, feelings and beliefs, and the outcomes of these, as vital professional benchmarks (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). Thus, systematic reflection is a fundamental skill that should be entrenched within nursing contexts.
There are a number of sources that nurses could draw on to ensure evidence based practice. These include nursing data bases, hospital policies and procedures, the NMBA Codes and Guidelines and peer reviewed journal articles. Daly, Elliot, Chang, and Usher (2014) point out that online electronic databases provide a wealth of health related information for nurses which would guide their care delivery. They reiterate the effectiveness of databases such as the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) and Medline, a database for medical and health research. Hospital policies and procedures and documents like the MIMS are also critical sources that nurses could use to inform their practice. For instance, the MIMS is a crucial document on the ward which nurses could refer to for … (provide more information) (MIMS, 2012). Another related source that would strengthen clinical skills is the Nursing and Midwifery Codes and Guidelines. According to NMBA (2016), all practising nurses in Australia are required to conform to specific codes that influence professional conduct. Thus, the NMBA Codes need to be employed by nurses as standards to gauge their nursing competency. In addition to these sources, peer reviewed journals are also significant tools that nurses could source evidence from. Daly et al., (2014) report that peer reviewed journals are comprehensive sources of information … (Add more information). Hence, nurses should harness the rich evidence offered by these sources to empower their practice.
