If you’re taking this course, you’re probably a student in an undergraduate commerce or business program. Your plan is to graduate, get a good job and draw a high salary. You have probably assumed that more education equals better job equals higher income. Is this true? To test this belief, a researcher plans to survey a sample of Australian adults.
A social survey recorded the data for two variables – annual income and years of education – to help determine whether education and income are related and, if so, what the value of an additional year of education might be. Perform the analysis by answering PARTS 1A-1D below.
PART 1B
First, the researcher wishes to use the graphical descriptive methods to present the data.
(e) The number of observations (N) is 1200 families. Calculate the approximate number of classes (K) the researcher should use to construct a histogram for each variable.
(f) He suggests using class intervals such as 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, .... 22-24 for the Years of Education and class intervals 0-15000, 15000-30000, 30000-45000, .... 150000- 165000, for Income. Use appropriate BIN values from these class intervals to draw a histogram for each variable, draw the frequency polygon and comment on the shape of the two distributions.

Second, the researcher wishes to use the numerical descriptive measures to summarize the data for the two variables Income and Years of education.
(g) Prepare a numerical summary report about the data for the two variables (Income and Years of education) by including the summary measures, mean, median, range, variance, standard deviation, smallest and largest values and the three quartiles, for each variable.
(h) Use five of the above summary measures to represent the information in a box plot for each variable. [If you have Office365, use Statistic Chart option in Excel. If not,
either use Data Analysis Plus or calculate the fences in Excel and the plot can be hand drawn using the five summary measures and the fences (and scanned the into your assignment word file).]
(i) Using the box plots, identify any outliers in the data for the two variables.

Prepare a descriptive statistical comparative summary report for a firm that provides information to clients who are keen to invest in one-year or three- year managed funds considering the star rating of the fund, average returns, risks etc.

Using the data, testat the 5 percent level of significance, whether the male population is affected more in terms ofthe number of cases and number of deaths. (Hint: Test whether the proportion of male confirmedcases is greater than 0.5 and whether the proportion of male deaths due to coronavirus is greater than 0.5.).

In the last part of the 20th century, scientists developed the theory that the planet was warming and that the primary cause was the increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which are the product of burning oil, natural gas, and coal (fossil fuels). Although many climatologists believe in the so-called greenhouse effect, many others do not subscribe to this theory. Further, Earth’s temperature has increased and decreased many times in its long history. We have had higher temperatures and we have had lower temperatures, including various ice ages. In fact, a period called the ‘little ice age’ ended around the middle to the end of the
nineteenth century. Then the temperature rose until about 1940, at which point it decreased until 1975. In fact, a Newsweek article published 28 April 1975, discussed the possibility of global cooling, which seemed to be the consensus among scientists at the time. There are three critical questions that need to be answered in order to resolve the issue.
A. Is Earth actually warming?
B. If the planet is warming, is there a human cause or is it natural fluctuation?
C. If the planet is warming, is CO2 the cause?
In terms of data, the generally accepted procedure is to record monthly temperature anomalies. To do so, we calculate the average for each month over many years. We then calculate any deviations between the latest month’s temperature reading and its average. A positive anomaly would represent a month’s temperature that is above the average. A negative anomaly indicates a month where the temperature is less than the average.

Is Earth actually warming?
File GLOBALA.xlsx contains the monthly temperature anomalies (°C) from 1880 to 2016. Using the
data answer the following:
(a) Considering the monthly temperature anomalies data over the data period 1880-2016, use a graphical technique to display whether there is global warming. Discuss the trend in data.
(b) Considering the average of the temperature anomalies, test to show that, on average, at the 5 percent level of significance, there is global warming. [Hint: Calculate the sample mean and sample standard deviation of all the temperature anomalies and test whether the population mean temperature anomalies is positive (? > 0)?.

File GLOBALB1.xlsx stores the monthly temperature anomalies (°C) and time period from 1880 to 1940, GLOBALB2.xlsx stores the data from 1941 to 1975, GLOBALB3.xlsx stores the data from 1976 to 1997 and GLOBALB4.xlsx stores the data from 1998 to 2016. Using these data answer the following:
For each of the four time period data, calculate the least squares line and the coefficient of determination. Report your findings. Has there been global warming in
each of the four periods.

If the planet is warming, is CO2 the cause?
Data for CO2 levels (ppm) in the atmosphere together with the temperature anomalies for March 1958 to May 2016 are stored in file GLOBALC.xlsx.
(d) Use a graphical technique to determine whether there is a linear relationship between temperature anomalies and CO2 levels. On the plot, insert the trend line and the
coefficient of determination R2 Interpret the intercept and the slope coefficient of the estimated linear trend line equation and comment on the fitness of the model.
(e) Using the estimated trend line equation, predict the temperature anomaly if the CO2 level
reaches 400ppm?
