The international community’s ‘Silencing the Guns’ initiative, with its aim to end all wars and civil conflicts and to prevent all terrorist activities and human rights infringements by 2020, proved to be unsuccessful. Countries such as Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia in the Horn of Africa are no exception.

Somalia has experienced constant conflict since the collapse of its government in 1991 and its population faces dire living conditions. Somalia begins to make incursions into neighbouring Kenya to alleviate its woes. Kenya voices its protest, however SomaliZSAaaaaignores Kenya’s protests and continues to advance into the northern territory of Kenya in search of food and other recourses. As a show of power, Somalia also starts to amass troops on its border with Kenya. Kenya threatens to launch a militarymstrike against Somalia, but this threat has no effect on Somalia. As tensions deepen between the two nations, Kenya ultimately launches a pre-emptive strike on Somalia.

The border tensions lead to many Somali nationals being detained in concentration camps in Kenya. Reports reach the United Nations that many Somali nationals are tortured and generally treated inhumanely. Furthermore, it is reported that six Kenyan military personnel raped and killed two Somali women in one of the concentration camps. Fearful for their lives, two Somali detainees escape. Both detainees were shot and killed and Kenyan soldiers burn their bodies as a public show of power.
