(b) Briefly explain, in your own words, why respiration is used as a measure of biological activity in soils.
QUESTION 2 (a) The diagram below depicts typical matric potential and volumetric water content relationships for different soil textures. With respect to soil texture and soilseparates, answer the following questions:
(i) Justify why you expect the ranking of volumetric water contents for the given textures at a matric potential of 10-2 .
(ii) With reference to the soil separates, why does the clay soil and silt loam soil have greater volumetric water content at matric potential of 101 ?
(iii) Explain which of these soils has greater plant available water, justifying your answer with an estimated volumetric percentage of plant available water.
(b) In your own words, what is cation exchange capacity (CEC) of soil, and how does it develop? Explain how texture and the organic matter status of a soil can influence CEC.
