Agricultural Soil Mechanics - Presentation Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: Question 1: A dry soil with Gs = 2.71 is mixed with 16% by weight of water and compacted to produce a cylindrical sample of 38 mm diameter and 76 mm long with 6% air content. Calculate:
  • the void ratio of the sample;
  • the final mass of the mixed soil.
Hints: The three known parameters for this question are: Gs = 2.71, W = 0.16, Av = 0.06. You will need to first find the soil bulk density for determining the final mass of the mixed soil and also the void ratio e. Question 2: An undrained soil sample has the effective shear strength parameters as: c’ = 25 kPa, ?’ = 30o. The total vertical and horizontal stresses acting at this sample are respectively ?1 = 200 kPa and ?3 = 100 kPa. No shear stress is also allowed to develop on the vertical and horizontal planes. Determine the pore pressure that causes the failure of this sample. Hint: In this particular question, the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion should be drawn and represented using c’ and ?’, rather than using c and ?. The solution procedure of this question is also somewhat “similar” to the last two examples given in the Week 2 lecture. Question 3: A subsoiler of 25cm width is to operate at a fixed depth of 0.6 m, with an attack angle varying between 5 to 30o. The subsoil being worked has ? = 1.8 t/m3, ? = 45o, ? = 30o, c = 45 kPa, and Ca = 20 kPa.
  • Predict (to within 5o accuracy) at what angle of attack the minimum draft will occur?
  • Determine the specific draft (kPa) at this particular angle.
  • Predict the draft force if the working depth of the subsoiler is increased to1.2 m at this particular angle.
  • Determine the draft force in the second pass if the above operation (1.2 m depth) is instead carried out in two stages of a first pass at 60 cm and a second at another 60 cm depth.
