Task: Research and Writing Exercise: Biography In the course of this unit you will come across a number of extraordinary individuals whose activism or cultural activities formed a vital part of the 20th century process of Indigenous resistance and revival. This assessment asks you to choose one person who has inspired you and to construct their Biography. But this will not just be a story of their lives, but a critical interrogation of where and how this person fits into this longer and more general story of resistance and revival. You might choose a sport star (such as Adam Goodes, Evonne Goolagong-Cawley, Nicky Windmar, Kathy Freeman, Lionel Rose...), a musician or performer (such as Archie Roach, Black Arm Band, Bangarra Dance Theatre ....), writer (Sally Walker, Lisa Bellair, Lisa Bellair), a painter, film maker or illustrator (Tracey Moffett, Emily Kummaware, Albert Namitjera, Rover Thomas...) or an activist (Charles Perkins, William Barak, William Cooper, Rachel Perkins...). Once you have chosen a person, you need to research and tell their story. However, you must do so in a way that connects their individual lives to the larger themes of this unit: that is, the emergence and nature of resistance and revival. You need to fully reference (using either Oxford or Harvard style) and formally present this Biography in an essay format. Submission is via Cloud Deakin. Requests for extensions should be directed to the Unit Chair. The criteria of assessment can be found below. Please note that the topic you choose for this essay cannot overlap with your research essay topic (so, for eg, if you focus on a sportsperson you cannot then write about sport in your research essay).
