Gateway Africa Airport (IATA designation: GIA) is a revamped, medium-sized regional airport hub outside a South African city with moderate traffic volumes of about 64 commercial flights a day, most of them medium- to small-sized aircraft. Airport Apron Services manages all ancillary services on the apron, i.e. the ‘airside’ area on which the aircraft are situated. This will include baggage handling on and off the aircraft, as well as all other cargo-related issues. It also manages all airside maintenance.
However, for the purpose of this case study, the emphasis will be on two of Airport Apron Services’ other important functions: Cleaning Services and Refuelling.
The Cleaning Services division of Airport Apron Services cleans the toilets in all the aircraft using aviation-approved cleaning chemicals and materials. Importantly, workers also drain the toilet waste (known in the industry as ‘blue water’) from the aircraft toilet tanks by a specialised suction system into a mobile purpose-built holding tank on a medium-sized diesel truck. The waste water is disposed of into large underground holding tanks, which are then diverted to an off-site treatment facility.
Refuelling is done by large diesel tankers (‘bowsers’) that are driven to the aircraft. Refuelling works by means of a hydraulic motor with flow control valves and hydraulic lines, and a pump attached to fuelling nozzles and hoses. The aviation fuel at Gateway Africa Airport is transferred to aircraft via one of two methods: overwing or underwing. Overwing fuelling is used on smaller planes, helicopters and all piston-engine aircraft at the airport. Overwing fuelling is similar to car fuelling — one or more fuel ports are opened and fuel is pumped in with a conventional pump. Underwing fuelling, also called single-point fuelling, is used on larger aircraft and is only for jet fuel.

Fuel is collected via standard suction pump technology from above-ground bulk jet fuel tanks.
Aviation fuel is a specialized type of petroleum-based fuel. It is generally of a higher quality than fuels used in less critical applications, such as heating or road transport, and often contains additives to reduce the risk of icing or explosion due to high temperatures, as well as other specific properties. The aviation fuel most used at Gateway Africa Airport is 100LL. It is dyed blue and contains a relatively small amount of tetraethyl lead (TEL), hence it is a ‘low lead’ aviation fuel. 100LL usually has a TEL content of 0.3–0.5 g/l and is the most commonly available and used aviation fuel in the world.
