Case Study 1: Angela
Angela a 27-year-old female, has been referred from her job agency to your service for help with her anxiety, self-harming behaviours and drug addiction. Angela has previously attended her GP who referred her for a Mental Health assessment and has documentation for a diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Angela appears as nervous, underweight, displays agitated behaviour, and has what appears to be a recent cutting mark on her wrist. Angela states that she is in a violent relationship with the father of her 6-year-old child (Anna) who is currently in care. Angela wants to start the reunification process to get her child back.
Angela used to lead a highly active lifestyle having been a runner until she got involved with her current partner John. In the early stages of their relationship (which started 9 years ago) Angela disconnected from her friends, family and running group because John wanted to spend lots of time together with her. When she began to reconnect, John became angry and this is when the violence, drinking and use of heroin started. Because of family violence and parental drug use Anna's school made a report which resulted in Anna being removed from parents' care six months ago.
When asked about the drug behaviour Angela has stated that she drinks most days ,gets smashed on the weekends and uses heroin every week though that has been more in recent months she doesn't feel that she is out of control it's just a coping mechanism for' all the troubles in her life'. Angela has always wanted to be a fitness trainer so would like to get back into running, complete some qualifications in fitness education and get a part time job in the industry. Of most importance to Angela is reconnecting with her family. And getting Anna back.
Angela's family consists of her parents and an older sister who all live nearby her home.
Case Study 1: Julie
Julie has come by the free "drop-in" counselling clinic where you work to get some information and advice. Julie is a 22-year-old single woman who has been living with her boyfriend Jack in Berrimah for the last four years. She and Jack have been heroin addicts for as many years. She has limited numeracy and literacy skills.
When Julie was 10 years old, her father, whom she says was a very heavy drinker, left her mom and the kids and never came back. At 14 she started drinking and smoking marijuana. At 16 she had dropped out of high school and at 18 she moved in with Jack. He introduced her to heroin.
Julie reports using about a 1/2 gram of heroin per day just to be able to function and feel comfortable. To pay for the heroin and pay the rent on their apartment, Jack does not work, instead, she works the streets at night. When she starts drinking, she is not able to control herself to stop drinking. If she cannot score enough heroin, she will try to score either some Valium to "tide me over until I can get some 'horse-. She says she has tried cocaine but, "I really didn't care for the high all that much." Julie tells you that the alcohol and heroin help to calm her nerves and get her through the night. Julie believes she is pregnant and knows it's her boyfriend's baby. However, she's not sure she can stop using dope or stop working to have the baby even though Jack wants her to keep it. She is really confused at what she should do and is asking for you to help her make some decisions. Her friend who works with her at night has told her not to stop using dope if she is pregnant "because it's worse for the baby than to keep using". Julie tells you "I just don't know what I should do?"
