Scenario 1 - Alice is a 4.5-year-old girl who lives with her mum, dad and a 9-year old brother in Northwest Sydney. She recently started attending your long day-care service for 3 days. She also attends a speech therapy session once a week. Alice's mum is a stay-at-home mum and dad is a banker. Alice has a strong interest in insects and will spend hours playing with plastic insects and lining them up or looking at her book of insect pictures. When in a quiet relaxed environment Alice can concentrate for extended periods. Alice loves going on picnics with her family at the local park where she likes to find a quiet spot to look at insects in the garden. Alice is showing interest in communicating using gestures and pictures. Alice was diagnosed with traits of global developmental delay and MD at the age of 3. However, she is due to have an accurate diagnosis according to her current skills and development. Alice's maternal aunt was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome as a teenager. Alice shows behaviours like lining up toys, playing alone, flapping her hands, and rocking her body back and forth. Alice has no verbal language and often uses challenging behaviours like biting and screaming to communicate her needs. Alice gets easily scared with loud noises and shows extreme meltdown.

Scenario 2 — Adam is a 5-year-old child who attends your preschool 2 days a week. Adam has two older sisters and he enjoys to spend time being involved in what they are doing. Adam likes to play alone in his own play space. Adam shows interest in sand-pit play, painting and construction play when he is in the preschool. Adam finds sensory activities particularly calming. Adam enjoys going to the pool or beach with his family and can concentrate for long periods when playing with sand. He was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 4 and has an HMS plan in place. His parents stated during the enrolment that many early childhood education and care services have refused to enrol Adam due to his condition. Parents informed that Adam gets very aggressive and shows constant temper tantrums if he doesn't get what he wants. During first two weeks you noticed that he easily gets frustrated and often requires assistance from others to do things such as dressing himself, pack or unpack his belongings etc. Adam has emerging fine-motor skills.
