Part 1
Assessment instructions
Instructions
- Where should we establish a new Fitness Centre?
- You will be allocated a set of data from a local government area (LGA). You will use this data as well as simulated survey data in your quantitative analysis.
- Note that the 2016 ABS census data for your LGA in Sydney was downloaded using the Tablebuilder Basic tool (registration to the ABS required to access the tool).
- About Local Government areas (LGAs)
- You are examining a local government area in Sydney, New South Wales. LGAs may go under various titles such as City Councils, Shire Councils or Regional Councils. The actual title is not important (i.e. whether they are called a city council, shire or municipality). Be aware that they are generally made up of a number of suburbs, so the City of Randwick is not the same as the suburb Randwick but includes other suburbs such as Maroubra. It would be a very good idea to consult maps to learn exactly what area you are dealing with.
- These websites may be useful to learn more about LGAs and find maps.
- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_government_areas_of_New_South_Waleshttps://www.olg.nsw.gov.au/public/find-my-council/Additional data is available for local government areas (LGAs) in Quickstats, which also shows a map of the area and its location in Australia.
- First, carry out the statistical analysis as required in the questions on your provided spreadsheet. Then, answer the questions provided for the written assessment.
- Note that you are not expected to write your answers based on the current business environment, which is seriously affected by coronavirus issues. You can choose to base your answer on either a pre- or post-COVID-19 business environment. Please specify which you are environment you are choosing.
- 1. Background reading

- 2. Spreadsheet
- Your spreadsheet contains the necessary data and five analysis questions. The questions are:
- Age data
- Use the ABS census age data to prepare a graph of the age distribution of residents in the target age groups of 18-60 years inclusive.
- Calculate the mean and standard deviation age of people in these age groups.
- Income data
- Use the ABS census data on family incomes to calculate the mean and standard deviation of family income.
- You will need to provide a reasonable endpoint for the open-ended class.
- Exercise hours data
- Use the survey data to calculate the mean time spent exercising in the past month.
- Assuming a population standard deviation of 3.5 hours, test the hypothesis that the population mean is at least 14 hours against a one tail alternative, using a 5% level of significance.
- Confidence interval
- Use the survey data to construct a 95% confidence interval for the proportion of people in the target LGA who currently use fitness centres.
- Regression
- Use the survey data to carry out a regression with age as the independent variable and hours of exercise per month as the dependent variable. Show the output on a new sheet.
- Write the regression equation then test the hypothesis that ?1=0?1=0 using a two-tail test and a 1% level of significance.
- 3. Short answer questions
- Answer the three following questions, with a limit of 200 words per a question:
- With the ultimate goal of deciding on whether or not to open a new Fitness centre in your LGA, which kind of additional data do you think would help complement your statistical analysis?
- With reference to the additional data discussed in question 1 and/or to the available data which kind of additional statistical method would you consider to aid your final decision?
- Provide your final recommendation about whether a new fitness centre should be opened in your LGA. In your response take into account any statistical analysis performed in the Excel spreadsheet and any statistical analysis discussed in previous questions.
