The handin key is report. This assessment item is worth 12.5% of marks for the course. For this assessment, we are asking you to write a report on an extension topic related to PDC. The essential idea is for you to choose a topic that goes a little beyond what we have talked about in lectures, to investigate it and its relationship to PDC, and then write a report summarising your findings. You should write the report in such a way that it clearly conveys your ideas to someone who has some background knowledge of PDC concepts, but doesn't know much about the topic that you are explaining. See below for more specific information. Choice of topics is quite flexible. I've set out a few below that you can use, but you are encouraged to find something that you find particularly interesting, and formulate a topic from that. You should proceed something like this. First, formulate a topic; find some material about it; filter out the best ideas from what you find; then express those ideas in your own words, and end up with a report of 1200 to 1500 words in length (plus references). Make sure that it is structured for readability. This is quite short, so your best approach will be to identify a specific idea that you can write about concisely. Your report should consist of: a short introduction about your field of investigation, narrowing down to something specific; a summary of the ideas that you want to convey (this must be in your own words); a short conclusion, summarising why these ideas are important. Clear structuring of your document, with clearly indicated sections, is important. Make sure to include a cover page with your name, student ID, and topic. Diagrams and graphs can be used. But keep in mind that they must be used carefully, and explained within the text. Simply inserting a diagram and leaving it up to the reader to figure out its meaning and significance is never a good idea! But a diagram or graph that directly contributes to points that you are making in the text, and aids their understanding, is fine. You may decide for yourself about formatting. What we will be looking for is clarity and readability. Here are some topic suggestions: 0. Special topic: Performance analysis with an Amazon auto-cluster. Focus on how PDC is relevant to it, and used in it. The TOP500 Supercomputer Sites (top500.org) is an annual collation of the highest performing supercomputers installed and used around the world, broken down by architecture, by country of origin, and various other aspects. Your report could cover aspects of this that you find interesting. There is plenty to think about! In lectures, we have mentioned data parallelism. A contemporary tool that makes use of data parallel ideas is Google MapReduce. This is highly relevant to the general field often referred to as Big Data. Write your report exploring the relationships between data parallelism, MapReduce and Big Data. The University of Adelaide has a supercomputer, Phoenix. Write about Phoenix: its architecture; its hardware components; the styles of computing that it supports; the projects that are done on it. Write your report on anything that you find interesting about Phoenix. Whenever we think about parallel computing, we talk about performance. Measurements of performance are used in ranking the top 500, for example. Or in comparing one computer against another. To make meaningful comparisons, we need standardised tests. These are called benchmarks. Write your report about benchmarking in parallel computing, focusing on some aspects of comparison or testing that are interesting to you. Write about PDC aspects of hardware and software used for high-performance graphics applications. This is a big and interesting area, so if you want to work here, find a more specific aspect first. Weather modelling and numerical weather prediction are extremely important areas of application of PDC. You could write about how these models work, typical computers used, and a case study. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology is a leader in these areas. Blockchain. This is currently a much talked about technology. Why is it important, and how are parallel and/or distributed concepts relevant to it? We are looking for something clear, concise, readable, and reasonably self-contained. Some topics above are broad in scope. You will generally need to find a subset to focus on, in order to write sensibly within the constraints noted above. So make sure to allow enough time to think about your area, focus on something, and do a first draft before writing your final version. The first draft will invariably be too long: writing it again, with the experience gained, should yield a good document of the right length.
