A 265 kWR ammonia refrigeration system for a cool room has a flooded evaporator operating at -2.0 oC, with the refrigerant condensing at 42.0oC and 2.0 K subcooling. The system is oversized for future expansion, using a Mycom 6WB compressor (rated capacity 573 m3/h). Refrigeration is required for a blast freezer with a flooded evaporator at -40.0 oC. The excess capacity of the existing compressor and condenser is used as the high stage in the new system, as shown in the figure, with the existing system shown at the top and the new system components identified by the dotted box. The intercooler of the new system operates at -2.0 oC. It can be assumed that refrigerant exits the low stage compressor at 98.0 oC, the condenser has sufficient capacity, and that pipe losses are negligible.
(a) Calculate the refrigerant volume flow rate leaving the existing -2.0 oC evaporator.
(b) Determine the mass flow through the new blast freezer evaporator, assuming that the existing 6WB compressor is running at full capacity. (14 Marks)
(c) Calculate the refrigeration capacity available for the new blast freezer evaporator, and select a Mycom reciprocating compressor suitable for the low stage operation from the attached sheet.
