Highlights
Task:
Overview
Individually, you submit an audio assignment on a topic in nutrition. You will be researching, writing and presenting a “podcast episode” on a current or highly debated topic in nutrition. For
more information on what a podcast is, see: https://www.thepodcasthost.com/listening/what-is-a- podcast/
Time limit
10 minute podcast episode
Marking scheme – two parts
Preparation content
- approval of topic
- approval of sources
- mid-semester check in
Presentation content
- overall effectiveness at conveying information
- proper length of the podcast episode
- content: background information, physiology and nutrition, views from both sides of the argument (if there is one), current treatments, why it’s beneficial, etc.
- creativity including segment changes, interesting facts, tricks to keep the audience engaged
- sources are appropriate (including at least one journal article on the subject)
What is expected:
- your podcast should have a format with several “segments”. You should introduce each of your segments appropriately.
1. Introduction: Background information/history of topic
- this could include when the topic was first discussed, who were the pioneers in the topic and why the topic first came to be of interest
2. Physiology
- what physiological changes occur in the body?
- why are these changes beneficial/harmful?
- how is this topic considered a treatment (if applicable) to disease(s)?
3. Debate
- why is this topic controversial?
- why are medical professionals in favour/disfavour of this treatment/topic?
4. Future directions and conclusion
- where will research take us now?
- which evidence is more convincing and why?
Sources
Your podcast episode should be written using various sources. The best sources to use will be journal articles or textbooks. Websites can be used but should not be your primary sources – often material on websites is incorrect and posted by people who are not trained experts. You should use websites to find ideas, and then source the ideas from textbooks, books written by registered dieticians and journal articles.
Podcast episodes written with mostly or all websites as sources will receive a very poor mark (less than 50%).
You do not need to list your sources in the audio file, but you must include them in a list in your written script.
Your sources should be primarily between 2015 to present (2020) to ensure the information is the most up to date and accurate.
How to record your podcast
Use the Voice Memo app on your smart phone and make sure you are using a headset with a microphone and speak directly into the microphone. The Voice Memo app will generate a file that you can edit, and then mail to yourself. You will upload this file onto eLearn as part of your final submission.
Written Script
You will be required to turn in a written script with your podcast episode. Your written script should be exactly what you say in the podcast episode, word for word (this is not plagiarism of yourself because you are merely submitting your podcast episode in a second format). At the end of the written script, you should list all your sources.
