Assignment Task

Assignment 1: An exercise in praxis: Action & reflection

Part 1: (approx. 300 words)

Think of an example from your teaching placement of a child whose emotional or social wellbeing concerns you. You will be visiting your placement site/ ECEC site three times during the semester, to implement a specific intervention in this situation.

Write a brief description of this child, and the situation that you noticed. Explain exactly what you have seen (or have been advised by the site) that leads you to believe that this child struggles with connecting socially or emotionally with adults or other children at the centre or school (for example, facial expressions, posture, behaviour etc.).

You should draw on your emerging understanding of the Australian Early Development Index domains of Emotional Maturity and Social Competence, in thinking about the child’s needs and issues in this task.

*Your session plan is be included in your 1500-word limit.

Part 2:

1. Prepare a session plan for this child (this could be a group session that will address this child’s particular needs) using any format you feel comfortable with. This session plan* must address the situation you have described in part 1. Think about possible ways it might be extended through two more sessions.

2. It should describe:

a. Time of day and location of session

b. Those who will be involved (staff and children)

c. Description of the session, including materials needed

d. Brief rationale, including how it might be used beyond this individual to work with children identified as vulnerable within your local area, under the social or emotional areas of the index. e. Proposed pedagogical strategies

f. Comments on possible evaluation/reflection

g. Possible extension activities, or variations for future sessions.

Part 3: (approx. 600 words)

Write a critical reflection on the sessions you implemented for this child. This critical reflection should explain what your values are, as a teacher, and how this session plan reflects your values, and the needs of the child as described in part 1.

It should contain a critical evaluation of the impact of your sessions on the child, including any progress they made, or reasons why it may not have been successful. This critical reflection/evaluation is intended to demonstrate your pedagogical knowledge and should draw on theoretical research to back up your practice.
