Hint: water authority websites are a good place to start as they often have simple schematics of water supply infrastructure.

Module 2B - Wastewater

Maybe you live in a non-sewered area and rely on septic tanks. Hint: water authority websites are a good place to start as they often have simple schematics of their wastewater treatment/disposal infrastructure.
Same deal as for water supply....to avoid doubling up one might have to look somewhere else if a specific area gets discussed early.

Module 2C - Stormwater
Hi Everyone,
Stormwater management, water supply, and wastewater treatment/disposal have traditionally been developed as separate entities. I would like you all to read the weblink info regarding Integrated Water Cycle Management (IWCM) and relate these to what is currently happening in your area. Can you briefly discuss some alternatives?

Great to read the nuanced discussion on the relative influence of competitive sustainability pressures and coercive power of legislation and regulation. It's a pretty even spread between those who think legislation and regulation are 'more effective than competitive pressure (thanks to James, Ayu, Rosemary, and Benjamin) compared to those who consider that 'the dollar rules the way' (thanks Charlotte, Adam, and Andrew). Equally, many have argued - quite rightly - that they are interrelated that in effect 'regulation can 'kick start competition'.  

A couple of you also emphasized the need to consider a businesses context into the debate, for instance, the relative maturity of the firm, its competitors and the nature of the products or services it delivers (thanks Jonathon, Jacyln, and Aileen) - all issues we consider further in Weeks 4, 5 & 6. 
 
More so than in previous eras, the creation of legislative and regulatory frameworks and the behavior of organizations is porous - the actions of organizations are more open to broader external influences. As we touch on later in the course, some organizations are particularly exposed to environmental lobbying (from consumers, NGOs, etc); whereas others operate in sectors predisposed (culturally, economically, competitively) to environmental management, while many think they will derive little benefit from the sustainable practice.
 
While recognizing the importance of context and competitive pressures we should also recognize that legislation/regulation is only as good as its compliance regime, and the enforcement of penalties for non-compliance is critically related to effective oversight and accountability. Environmental standards that are not monitored are ineffective organizational tools. Less stringent compliance arrangements that are enforced are more effective than stringent guidelines that are never observed.
