This assessment task requires you to create a short podcast providing a narrative of your own personal language and/or literacy journey. 1,500 Words equivalent, 5 mins Podcast 30% Session 3
Purpose
The purpose of this assessment task is to:
reflect on your own language and literacy learning experiences and to connect these to theories of language acquisition.
The unit learning outcome(s) assessed is/are:
LO1: Analyse how language and literacy operate as complex and contextual social acts that create and sustain power relations.
LO2: Demonstrate an understanding of supporting childrens’ language and literacy learning in rich environments, including children with English as an additional language.
Assessment Structure
Create a podcast describing your personal literacy or language journey
Decide whether you want to focus on language learning (first or second) and/or on a form of literacy, that is how you use language for particular purposes.
Reflect on any language and literacy experiences that you feel have led you to this moment in your life. What learning experiences have you had which have helped to build (or perhaps hinder) your own language learning and/or literacy?
Instructions
To get started on your assessment task, please follow the instructions below;Brainstorm the language experiences you have had in your journey. This would include influential people who have helped you learn and times when you had an 'aha' moment. Where these experiences positive or negative? How have these impacted your attitude towards literacy and learning?
Make yourself familiar with the assessment rubric (found in the assessment dropbox link). Refer back to these criteria during this process.
Begin sketching out a plan for your podcast. This can take many forms. See the example below for ideas:
Introduction to your language or literacy learning background (contextualise your situation for the listener).
Identify 3 or 4 main experiences/influences which have shaped your literacy learning. Ensure that you include references to significant others, your immediate environment and greater political and social influences.
Identify points where you could/should use a reference.
Final thoughts on how this has impacted you and lessons you have taken from the experience.
Research some theories on language or literacy learning to are relevant to your ideas. Use at least 4 academic references to support your argument. You can also use more informal sources in addition.
Put together your ideas - write a script and practice your podcast to ensure it falls within the 5 minute time limit.
Revise your script. Ask a peer or colleague to review your writing. Make sure you have referred back to the assessment rubric and included all elements required. Double check your citations and bibliography.

Assessment Criteria
The following levels of criteria will be used to grade this assessment task:
Criterion 1: Student has communicated their personal literacy journey in a clear and comprehensive manner supported by key experiences/examplesCriterion 2: Student has demonstrated their understanding of language and literacy as a complex and contextual social act, through use of examples which include significant others, their immediate environment and greater political and social influences.
Criterion 3: Student has effectively and appropriately made connections with literature and/or theoretical viewpoints
Criterion 4: Writing is accurate and clear regarding structure, expression, grammar, spelling and presentation in the style of a podcast script. Word count is correct. Referencing is accurate and consistent with the Harvard style.
