You must write an argumentative essay of approximately 1500 words, in response to a specific question or statement raised by the Lecturer at the start of the unit. The learning outcomes of the essay are centred around Biblical interpretation and application, and you may therefore expect a question on matters covered in the first four weeks of the course - such as hermeneutics (in either of its meanings), context, and exegesis. The essay is due in the week of Seminar 8. and is worth 30% of the unit assessment.

The topics are as follows. Students are to choose ONE option. The essay is an individual assignment. 
Option 1. "Them then, or Us Now?" Is it more important to understand what the Biblical texts meant to the original readers, or to apply them to our own context today? 
Option 2. "An Open Text?" Is the Bible's good news accessible to the everyday person, or does it require spectated theological training to understand?
