In this assignment, you will conduct a financial statement analysis to evaluate the financial performance by ARB Corporate Ltd (ARB). You will use Bapcor Ltd (BAP) as the benchmark (or the paired competitor) in the analysis. Financial statement data for the two companies have been provided in file Data.xlsx. 
 

The assignment is designed to help you learn to:

• Calculate, interpret and compare financial ratios
• Apply research skills to assess a company’s business operations and strategy and to learn about an industry
• Apply analytical skills to compare financial statements for two companies in the same industry

Your final report will have 6 parts: Executive summary, Business strategy, financial statement analysis, industry analysis, stock price performance and conclusion .The remaining will be awarded to writing style. The requirements for each section will be described in details below. You should also read the “Rubrics.docx” and “Check\ before submiting final report.docx” documents that further describe what are expected from the report. Submission instructions are provided at the end of this document.

Executive Summary
Executive Summary states the purpose of the report, provides a clear and succint summary of the main findings in the report and draws conclusions or recommendations based on the findings.

Business strategy
You need to provide background information on the company and describe the company’s products/services and its strategy.
Hint: you should do a search for studies on the company via Web of Science or Google Scholar. Annual report of the company also provides relevant information.

Financial statement analysis

• Describe trends in horizontal, common size and ratio analysis
• Identify factors that contribute to the trends observed in the data
• Analysis should be organized around the dimension of profitability, operating efficiency and risk
• The analysis should contain opinion/conclusions on the overall financial health of the company

The following should guide your financial statement analysis:

• Profitability analysis should include discussions of horizontal analysis of the income statement to assess revenue and profitability growth; the common size income statement to assess expense components; relevant profitability ratios (include at least ROA, ROE, PE, PB). DuPont technique should be used to identify the main factors that drive the trend in ROE.
• Operating efficiency analysis should include at least asset turnover, inventory turnover, receivable turnover (in case that some ratios are not relevant, provide discussion why they are not relevant)
• Analysis of risk should include horizontal analysis of balance sheet to assess asset and liability growth; common size balance sheet to assess asset mix and capital structure; a discussion of at least four relevant solvency and liquidity ratios Industry analysis
• Describe the industry and identify key companies in the industry. Explain how the company fits into the industry
• Compare the strategies of your assigned company and the paired competitor company. Identifies the relative strengths and weaknesses of the companies’ respective strategies.
• Compare the profitability of your company with the paired competitor using at least ROA, ROE, PE, PB. The analysis also identifies what is driving the company’s relative profitability performance.
• Compare the operating efficiency measures of your company with the paired competitor using at least asset turnover, inventory turnover, receivable turnover. The analysis also identifies what is driving the company’s relative operating efficiency.
• Compare the solvency and liquidity risk of your company with the paired competitor using at least four appropriate ratios. The analysis also identifies what is driving the company’s relative solvency and liquidity strength.

Stock price performance

• Describe the company’s stock performance over the year 1 July 2020 - 31 June 2021
• Discuss events that may have led to company’s highest and lowest stock prices
• Provide an opinion on the future direction of the stock Hints on data download and processing are provided in file ‘Some guide on Excel work’. 

Conclusion and outlook opinion

• Synthesize the information in the report to provide an opinion on the company’s outlook
• The opinion should assess the financial and strategic prospects of the company relative to its paired competitor.
• The opinion should be substantiated with the evidence and conclusions from the earlier sections of the research report.

Writing Style, Organization and Presentation
The 10 points will be based on the overall prose and flow and the presentation of the paper. The papermshould use accurate grammar and contain clear headings to guide the reader. Use tables to summarize data and graphs/charts to visualize data analysis results. Tables and charts should have captions and be numbered and referred to in the text appropriately (see file ‘Example of tables, charts and references.pdf’).
