Analysis of Genes from the ExAC Data and DE Data.
The Exome Aggregation Consortium, ExAC, is an organisation that utilises exome sequencing data to summarise the genes in the genome. 3230 genes were found to show fewer variants than expected (ExAC Broad Institute 2019). Invariant genes are genes that show fewer mutations, limiting the variance across species.
The DE data was obtained from the head of a developing chicken embryo where FGF signalling was knocked out, this affected 12,018 genes. From these genes, the top 850 downregulated genes were selected as these showed the greatest impact to the knock-out and were compared with the invariant genes from the ExAC data. The results shown in Figure 1 show that 197 genes are shared; these 197 genes are highly conserved, however are greatly downregulated with the knock-out of FGF signalling. This suggests that these genes are reliant on FGF signalling during the development of chicken embryos.
