Highlights
Your research dossier should document and reflect on your individual contribution to the team work, formulation of the strategies and the final presentation. As part of this you can talk about the strategy you arrived at (briefly), but the reflection is not about the strategy itself, but about your work process.
It should provide the following:
1. An account of your research activities (e.g. investigation of other museum’s websites) and your own analysis of data, when relevant, this can include citations from academic sources (i.e. course reading).
→ try to be really specific and selective here.
For instance, if you looked at 10 museum websites it is worth naming a few and discussing one site or particular features of sites in detail to say how these shaped your thought process, ideas, etc. It does not matter if ideas or the sites themselves did not ultimately make it into the presentation or strategy, you can still discuss them in detail as they contributed to the approach: so, sticking to my example, I could for instance offer a detailed analysis of the “Viewpoints” or “In Focus” features of the Photographers Gallery / Tate Modern websites and discuss the wider media strategies they are part of and reflect how this might lend itself to the brief we received from MAAS. I could, however, also offer a detailed account of sites that were unsuitable and explain why they cannot be adopted, as this is also part of figuring out your idea.
Alternatively, if you focused on social media presence of other institutions rather than websites, you can focus in detail on your thinking. Here again it is great to work from actual examples, so I know what you are being inspired by and how your ideas came into shape.
Alternatively, if you focused more on the production of the actual presentation (over the research), you can annotate and reflect on this. What guided your decisions? What were you inspired by? Again, be as specific as possible – if you say I wanted to look cool and sleek, provide an example of “cool” content, etc...
→ If your strategy and your approach to the project is shaped by some of the concepts we discussed in this unit / progress journals (i.e. Participatory Media / Attention Economy / Free Labour & Relational Labour) you can use these concepts as part of narrating how you formulated your ideas and / or were inspired by the strategy of other museums / research producers. You do not have to use these concepts, but it can be very effective to use them as they hopefully will have shaped the way you analysed other web spaces & articulated the media strategy you are presented.
2. A reflection on the overall workflow how you communicated with your team (e.g. e-mail, whatsapp – was this a good strategy? What worked? What didn’t), how you organised the work, shared information and how you motivated each other. This can also include an account of how you decided what information was relevant and why you did not share certain things.
→ Here I value self-awareness & honesty, over spin: How did you ensure that you are asking yourself and your team mates: “Am I being too dominant? Am I engaging in dialogue? Am I backing up my opinions, ideas & suggestions with research & analysis?” How did you organise your own work flow? What worked? Didn’t work well? What would you do differently, what did you learn from the process? These are the kinds of questions that can be very effective here.
