Question

The purpose of the second assignment is to consolidate what you have learned and to develop your visual and art historical skills for the course assessment. 

Write an essay selecting one of the titles from the list below:

1. Write a critical appreciation of one picture that you like using the headings you have learned about i.e. composition, space, form, colour and subject matter.

2. In relation to a painting, a drawing or a print, write an essay answering the questions at the back of the textbook.

3. How important is the subject in a picture and why?

4. Compare and contrast two paintings of your choice under the headings: composition, space, form, tone, colour, subject matter and historical context.

5. Discuss the different kind of information to be gleaned about the past from looking at paintings. Choose one example from each of three different periods to illustrate your essay.

Your answer should be no more than words, including references and quotations, but not including the assignment title or the bibliography. For more details, see Appendix III: Word counts in the Student Handbook.
