LEARNING OUTCOMES ADDRESSED BY THIS COMPONENT:
LO1: Evaluate the impact of high-level languages and emulation currently in use for industrial control applications.
LO3: Analyse the architecture of distributed computer-controlled architecture with reference to Open Communication (OPC) for the data collection of processes and systems.

DETAILS OF THE ASSESSMENT
Model an industrial or commercial process using one of the tools developed in this module e.g. Matlab/Simulink) or in other modules (e.g. FlexSim). You do not have to detail the full process in the model of the case study; but your model should be detailed enough to allow you to develop
A high-level operational description for part of the control system
A mock-up of an HMI for maintenance, operation, or other suitable interface for your process
The report should give the background to the model, including appropriate use of the literature, and any specific assumptions, conditions or limitations that must be obeyed by the control system that would be developed later.
This report must be one document (please use the template provided on MyBeckett), in word format and submit to the appropriate assignment box on MyBeckett and Turnitin. You must also submit the model you have been using to the submission point on MyBeckett.
The suggested length of this part of the assessment is 2000 words. The standard penalty for coursework which fails to adhere to the stated count in the Assessment Description is 5% of the final mark for every ±10% outside the required limit. Title page, abstract, contents page, appendix do not count in the word count of 4000.

The Report
Using your Case Study for Part 1, produce a report between 2,000 and 4,000 words which addresses the following areas
Give a clear description of the data and control flows of your design, using appropriate technical methods of analysis, notation, and documentation.
For the control flows, give an account of the key control or supervisory decisions of the system using appropriate notations and function block diagrams.
Note: You should not produce a full implementation of the solution. However, you should document the key algorithms, timing constraints, execution and control sequences, etc. that would be expected as part of a full solution to the problem.
Produce a mock-up of the key aspects of the HMI that would allow an operator to monitor the system designed in (1) and (2). At a minimum the HMI should indicate to the operator that the system is functioning normally, but you should also show how fault states would be indicated (and, if possible, resolved).
Note: This is a mock-up, and you may use any appropriate drawing tool to show the screens in the HMI: or draw them by hand if preferred. However, you should give a clear account of the data flows to and from the HMI to the rest of the system. You may assume the HMI is primarily supervisory, but if appropriate the control flows should also be noted and discussed.
In addressing the case study, you make may any further assumptions that are either reasonable or required in you design; relevant literature has been provided for this purpose, but you are also encouraged to find your own sources. Any assumptions made, however, should be clearly signposted and justified wherever possible.
Finally: This is principally a report focusing on the design of a system. You may choose to implement or prototype aspects of the system if that makes it easier for you to understand the required design decisions. However, the marks will be awarded for the design, and not the implementation.
