To prepare for your final research essay, submit an essay plan and annotated bibliography.

Instructions

Part 1: Annotated bibliography

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources, with a brief summary of ideas, arguments, or evidence from each of them, that you think will be relevant for developing your essay. 

You can see some examples here and here. 

For this task you will thus need to do some reading. The number of readings is not mandated but I would advise using3 to 5 journal articles or book chapters. 

These may include the prescribed subject reading/s, but should include at least one source beyond those. For other sources you might check the recommended reading list for that week's topic here, or find your own sources. We'll go through some research methods for philosophy in the week 8 tutorials.

Note that although this is a small assessment, it may take some time to prepareonce the researching and reading time is factored in. However, it will mean that when you come to write your final essay you will already have done your research. 

For each reading, include its bibliographic details, followed by:

• Summary of its main ideas/arguments

• Statement of how you think you will use it in the essay, how it will be relevant

Depending on how many sources you have this text might be around words for each source.

The annotated bibliography will take up most of your words. I would suggest aiming for words for this part of the assessment, but this is a guideline, not a requirement.

Part 2: Essay plan

The essay plan should include what you plan to argue for (your main claim) and an outline of how you will plan to structure the essay (structure outline). 

The main claim should be a one-sentence statement that gives a clear, direct answer to one of the essay questions. (These will be posted by Week 5). 

The structure outline should state how you will argue for your main claim. This can be several sentences in prose, or you could use dot points. Either way, the outline should say what points, ideas, and/or evidence is to be discussed, in the order in which you will plan to discuss them. 

The Essay plan will likely be around words (again, a guideline rather than a requirement).

Note that you will not be committed to sticking to your essay plan in the final essay. Its purpose is rather to start off your thinking about the question you've chosen, and to give you a place to start your writing.
