The keeping of livestock inevitably involve health management. This poses serious challenges to the livestock owner who is not always educated on the different diseases and often does not have the necessary resources to identify diseases or to treat the sick animals. The shortage of veterinarians in the country do not alleviate this problem either The lecture on animal health discussed the Concept of early disease diagnosis and the symptomatic treatment of identified symptoms.

A video clip of a case study was discussed with the following symptoms observed.

• Severe nasal exudate tinted with blood
• Coronitis and difficulty to stand
• Swollen upper lip and ulcers on the dental pad

How you would perform a physical examination to gather more symptoms and reach a conclusion on a possible disease                                                           

2. This disease can reach epidemic proportions in the country. Explain in your own words how you would advise livestock farmers to manage this problem in a sustainable and practical way.

3. Consider aspects such as

• Vaccination
• Practical and sustainable vector control 
• Treatment of affected animals                 

Here are some problems that occurred in previous years

1. Sentence structure that does not make sense. Many of you used very long sentences that is stating more than one fact and then eventually the sentence does not make sense. On the other hand, you combined parts of sentences from literature sources and then the completed sentence does not make sense.

2. Guard against the Word program “tools” of using synonyms in an attempt to sidestep the plagiarism check. The synonyms used may not make sense in the sentence.

3. Be careful to use “fancy” adjectives in order to add volume to the text. This is an assignment for an agricultural degree, not an English Literature paper.

4. Pay attention to the method of referring to authors cited in the text and the reference list. Very few of you have done it correctly. There is a very specific method prescribed by the university and you should learn this. Ask the Library personnel to assist you with this if you do not know how.

5. I understand what you intended to bring over in your assignments, but you need to present it in such a way that everyone reading it should be able to understand it too.

6. Many of you made use of literature from other countries and you must understand that the epidemiology in other countries may differ vastly from South African conditions. This is why I encouraged you to make use of South African literature sources.

7. Spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence structuring is very important and you should pay special attention to it. Remember that you are busy with tertiary studies and you should pay attention to such detail in a report.
