Vertigo is a lyrical story of life in a country, explicitly, but it also nudges the spirituality of one. The author explores themes of loss and grief that is narrated under the lines of metaphors derived from nature. The book presents a harsh reality of living in Australian bushfires that are renewed through bushfire, much like human experiences that grow with each incident. The characters Anna and Luke look at this incident in parallel to their personal tragedies of their life. The book demands from its readers to assess the big picture simply by deriving it from small incidents that shape life. Luke and Anna decide to leave the city expecting to flee away from the past. On the coast they eventually discover a natural world that is self-sustaining, in sense, it is both destructive and rejuvenating within. Different incidents in this new life take them to their past asking them to reflect on the vessel of the past.

Everything changes in the life of Anna and Luke when they had a stillborn child. The world seemed shattered and hopes collapsed. It seems only reasonable that they decided to move than to dwell into their past. However, life channelizes itself as a web with an iteration of patterns. This makes Luke and Anna introspect and analyze their past, unintentionally. It is elucidated that the entire novella Vertigo revolves around the loss of Anna and Luke's child who was born still. Their decision to move away from their native place to the country is sealed that the visions of their son still haunt them and the listed multiple motivations seem to be hollow. Visions and thoughts of the boy return to the couple throughout the novel until the final events of the story where the couple is able to finally let go and move on. This incident marks the rebirth of emotions in the couple that was previously stilled with the birth of their child.

Luke seems to have immediately adjusted to life in the country and seems resolute to their decision of relocation. He develops new hobbies like bird-watching and becomes engaged in the readings that he finds buried under his shed. With his escalating interests in his hobbies, the receptiveness and empathy to his Anna's frustrations is reduced, Luke eventually becomes emotionally distant from his wife. "His detachment was infuriating" to Anna and he slowly becomes "tired of his wife's churlishness." The relationship between two seems stationary at this point. Also, Luke does not seem to be troubled by the rebounding memories and visions of the boy in congruency with Anna. However, with the approach of a bushfire, the perspective towards life changes for the characters. Reassurance by locals of how fires never reach settlements seemed hollow at this moment. The two witness the explosion of trees and the burning of houses. The expectations of happiness In life smelled like ash, for the second time. Post this experience, Luke breaks down and develops empathy for the feelings of Anna. This can be considered as a spiritual union between two that helps settle an emotional turmoil.

It is interesting to note how loss and birth have been narrated as a phenomenon one may experience repetitively in the journey of life. The abstracts of emotions and their display have been illustrated through metaphors found in nature. The characters draw parallels between the past and the present life in the entire narration depicting how patterns of life are inevitable like, at an instance, they exclaim "they can see the flames, zig-ragging lines of flickering orange that look like the lighted streets of cities." How the death of emotion is the birth of a new one lies in the heart of the story. The book explains how lingering to the past is not really a voluntary choice. Life is a loop of events that mask themselves in the iteration.
