• Choose a specific rite of passage within a specific culture to be the subject of your  research assignment (ex: Quinceañera or Bar Mitzvah) 

• Ensure you can find information of this rite of passage that has been peer reviewed • The rite can be from your own culture or one you are not familiar with. 

GUIDELINES FOR YOUR ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 

• You must include a working thesis statement or your argument for the paper • You are required to review 5 academic sources 

• For each academic source, you must include a summary of the key points of the source  and how this connects to your essay.  

GUIDELINES FOR WRITING YOUR RESEARCH PAPER  

• You are required to submit your paper in formal essay formatting including:  o Introduction: provide context for your topic, a summary of your key arguments,  and your thesis or the argument you are making.

o Main Body: provide a comprehensive description of the three stages of your rite  of passage, explain its functions, and the important symbols.  

o Conclusion: you should briefly summarize and analyze your research. Be sure  that you respond to your thesis or argument.  

o References Cited: present the sources used in your paper. You should only  include sources that have a corresponding in-text citation. You should use a  minimum of 5 academic sources.  

• Your paper should use the formal APA formatting style for both the References Cited and  the in-text citations.  

• While conducting research ensure that you are using reputable scholarly or academic  sources. This may include books and professional journal articles, as well as certain  periodicals. Reputable academic journals as can be found in JSTOR and Academic  Search Complete/EbscoHost which are accessible through the Langara library website. Popular sources such as magazine articles and newspapers may be appropriate, however  they will not count towards the required academic sources. Wikipedia and other editable  sources should not be used!
