They found that the 49 blonde people reported having significantly more fun than people with other hair colors. Guts, Power, and Glory (2000) found that blonde-headed footballers appeared to be having more fun on the field than either red-headed footballers or those with shaven heads, although the differences were not statistically significant. However, Guts et al. used an observational design, with the raters measuring fun as the width of the footballers’ smiles, so the validity of the observations is questionable, especially given the distance between the raters and the participants, which at times was over 100 meters.

Even within the same country, some conflicting results have been found. For instance, Bluey and Ocker (2001) reported that blondes had more fun only in Queensland, with no effects of hair color in other Australian states. ANOTHER PARAGRAPH OR TWO WITH EVIDENCE THAT BLONDES HAVE LESS FUN OR THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE There is more evidence to support the view that blondes have more fun than evidence which shows that this is not the case, but there are methodological problems with most of the research that has been conducted so far. For instance, Fyshwyck and Clark (1998) relied on self-report. Given that the idea that blondes have more fun has pervaded the popular media, it could be that blondes will overestimate their level of fun due to a social desirability bias.
The study of Guts et al. (2000) used observational measures of footballers’ smiles. It was not stated whether the observers themselves were blonde or not. There may have been a bias if the observers were blonde and hence may have tended to overestimate the width of the smiles of the blonde footballers. On the other hand, the evidence for cultural factors (Bluey & Ocker, 2001; Svensson & Koyano, 1997) is difficult to evaluate because there was not enough detail about how fun was operationalized. On balance, the evidence in favor of blondes having more fun is more convincing because of the greater methodological rigor. Therefore, it was thought likely that a controlled experiment would find that blondes have more fun than people with other hair color.
