An international business consortium based in Dubai is looking to invest in the tourism industry in Australia and has commissioned your team to undertake an analysis of the health and development over the last 10 years of the tourism economy in your allocated region.

The consortium will primarily focus on the accommodation sector but is open to look at a range of products within that including international backpacker hostels, domestic caravan parks, international student accommodation and hotels. The investor is looking at a 25 year plus investment horizon so is not overly concerned with what they consider the “temporary covid downturn” of the tourism economy in Australia.

The investor has therefore asked your team to analyse IVS and NVS data from 2009 – 2019 to consider the long term industry patterns for your region. Your team will be allocated a tourism region in Australia on behalf of the investor. You must use the IVS and NVS databases from TRA to write a 2500 word report on how the tourism economy has changed over the last 10 years and answer the following specific questions for the investment consortium.

(1) What are described as the major tourism assets of the region in various guidebooks (such as Lonely Planet) and promoted on government or industry tourism websites. Identify the top 5 strategic sites within your destination that impact the tourism economy. These could be natural sites such as national parks and beaches, built infrastructure such as museums or convention centres, employment sites such as farms that attract “working holiday makers” or universities that attract international students. Present a map of your region highlighting these assets.

(2) How has international visitation changed over 10 years to your destination? How has the mix of various nationalities changed over that period of time? What are the top 5 international markets in 2019 by both visitors and length of stay and expenditure. What are the key age groups that visit? How does this compare to visitation data for the whole of Australia?

(3) How has domestic visitation changed over 10 years to your destination? How has the mix of various origin states and intra-state visitation changed over that period of time? What are the top 2 interstate markets that visit in 2019?

(4) The high yielding international “backpackers” and “international student’ markets are of interest to the investor. Profile each segment in your region in terms of visitors and length of stay.
