Assessment Task:
Question – Section A:

How has your experience in the tutorial room this semester enhanced your appreciation of poetry, drama, and fiction?

Section A Requirements:

To answer this question, you are expected only to draw on the material you experienced in tutorials. “Material” here means: primary and secondary readings discussed and closely analysed in classes; activities performed (group work, writing tasks, whiteboard tasks) in class and that enhanced your understanding of a text; and peer-to-peer or peer-to-tutor discussions in class.

While you covered a great deal of material this semester – more than can be used in this 500-word response – your task for Section A of the Exam is to focus on the aspects of weekly class material that enhanced your understanding of the genre. Your weekly reflections and tutorial notes can be used as guides.

Only 11 out of the 14 weeks are assessable. This means that you only need to draw on the content covered in tutorials in weeks 2–8 & 10–13. Referencing content and activities from across the assessable weeks will be regarded more favourably than referencing material from only a small number of the week.

Question – Section B:

Critically examine the effect of rivalry, revenge, and sacrifice in the works of two gothic women writers studied this semester in the Fiction Module. Section B Requirements:

Section B requires a response as an essay.

In your answer, you are expected to explore in detail two features of the gothic that will help build your argument. These may include but are not limited to, the Byronic hero, mimetic identity, woman as scapegoat, cruelty, horror, the grotesque, the lone traveller, the uncanny, the female avenger, the sublime. (For more features, review the lectures and tutorials.)

Additionally, you are expected to make substantive reference to at least one of the following key narrative concepts in your essay: language, structure, perspective, focalisation, intertextuality, symbolism.

Section B is an exercise in critical thought and will require the use of at least two critical texts to support your reading of fiction. For critical texts, you are to search no further than vUWS or the WSU library catalogue.
