TASK 1 – CASE STUDIES :
APPRAISAL
INTRODUCTION
The search...is for the theory that transcends the moment and reveals an architectural idea. The technique for this search is the careful examination and analysis of buildings. The desired result is the development of theory to generate ideas with which to design architecture. - Roger H. Clark, Precedents in Architecture
Architectural precedent studies function as reference points between the built and unbuilt projects, to give a clear understanding of how technical knowledge can be reengineered in order to create an improved design solution.
LEARNING OUTCOMES - Upon completing this subject, the students should be able to:
Appraise the performance of advanced structure building system.
TASKS
01- APPRAISE THE BUILDING PERFORMANCE OF YOUR CHOSEN CASE STUDY PROJECT.
(Integrated with Theory & History / Design Studio 4 / Building Const Tech 04)
Write a short appraisal to describe the building construction and structural system of your building case study from Foundations to The Enclosure. The description of each component should be assisted with illustrations using your 3D model images, 2D drawings and diagrams.
1 - Superstructure: Building Envelope (Overall Construction System)
2 - Facade Construction Details (Curtain wall – Masonry / Glazing)
3 - Material Selection (Materiality) or Product Specification
Students are allowed to determine their own appropriate scale for all the drawings above. All drawings MUST have proper annotations and specifications that are accurate and the symbols must be neatly arranged. The dimensions and material must be realistic to the building studied but do not need to be accurately measured.
TASK 2 – SECTIONAL FACADE
INTRODUCTION
Architectural ideas and design thinking must be experienced through the Art of Making and not solely relying on a two-dimensional set of drawings. Learning Architecture via form-making helps to uncover the thought process that involves series of model mock-ups, testing out ideas by developing and exploring the unknown-provisional ideas of space configurations and structure in the physical form.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completing this subject, the students should be able to:
Illustrate the assembly methods for advanced structure buildings with architectural model, drawings and specification.
TASKS
• Produce a TYPICAL WALL SECTION : SCALE 1: 25 or equivalent.
• To Show (1) overall building construction (From Top to Foundation) or (2) Building portion (to show the unique features / Special details)
• Drawings must illustrate the façade details and materials (glazing, timber, steel, masonry)
• All components of the drawings must be annotated to demonstrate your understanding of the building construction system and follow the Construction drawing standard.
• Objective : To test student's understanding of construction knowledge, specifications and technical skills.
