Assignment objectives
On completion of this assignment the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge of the ground and soil conditions, materials, systems and components used in the construction of commercial buildings;
2. Demonstrate knowledge of the techniques used to incorporate them into the building, including sequencing of operations;
3. Evaluate design alternatives in terms of buildability and cost;
4. Communicate design alternatives using drawings reflecting the statutory standards.

Assignment brief
Introduction 

For Reports 1 and 2, your role is that of an architectural design and build construction organisation which has been approached by a client who wishes you to undertake the design and construction of a medium sized commercial retail development on a site they already own. The client’s brief, the site plan and site investigation information can be found on Blackboard.

Task

You are required to submit a report outlining the design and construction of a suitable basement foundation for the commercial retail development. The report should contain:

An introduction to conceptualize the problem, providing background and site analysis.
A discussion and analysis of the suitability of the various methods and technologies available for the construction of the basement area (i.e. the whole of the basement construction) in response to specific site conditions, comparing and contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of each, with a reasoned explanation of why you have chosen your preferred approach and how the requirements of client are fully addressed.  
A tabular cost comparison of the various basement construction options considered.  

A step by step explanation (using drawings and/or diagrams to illustrate) of the major construction sequencing of tasks and activities involved in the construction of your chosen design. Site and floorlayout plan(s)showing the details of the car park entry/exit etc.should be provided.

A professionally written report, including such qualities as structuring sections and paragraphs to bring out a sound professional discussion, control of the conciseness and relevance of the discussion, and to use appropriate citation and referencing techniques.  

You are required to make assumptions or ‘educated’ guesses on any information/material that you believe to be missing. If this is the case you are to explain/justify these assumptions.

This course places a high value on the development of students’ academic and professional writing including such qualities as structuring sections and paragraphs to bring out a sound professional discussion, control of the conciseness and relevance of the discussion, ability to summarise and critique the arguments of pertinent writers etc. and to use appropriate citation and referencing techniques. Given these expectations, please note that the report should achieve the objectives within 3000 words ± 10% excluding drawings, tables, references and appendices.

b) Submission referencing 

All sources must be referenced appropriately, and all figures and tables must be numbered, titled and integrated into the body of the report. Care must be taken in developing good academic and scholarly practice in citations. Use the Harvard or APA system or similar. Details can be found at http://libguides.newcastle.edu.au/referencing

Use direct quotation very sparingly (as a guide, direct quotesshould constitute no more than 10% of your whole report). In preference to quoting a lot, present the author’s argument in your own words. When it is important to quote ensure that you are doing so to draw attention to the key features of the author’s arguments. Refer to the section on The University’s rules and regulations on plagiarism in this Course Outline.  

c) Submission format  

Use a report format with a numerical hierarchy (or otherwise) of headings and sub?headings as shown in this document. Use an A4 type written PDF (.pdf) format and name the file as Surname First name_3100_Ass1.pdf e.g. Smith John_3100_Ass1.pdf.  

The file size can be an issue when submitting through Turnitin. You are advised to review the size of your file ensuring it will not take too long of upload time. If you are including photographs and other digital graphic media it is recommended that you adopt processes (Photoshop, PowerPoint etc.) to reduce it to 72dpi format. It is important to note that electronic submissions will be marked in their electronic form for this course. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that any filessubmitted in Adobe format are readable. THERE WILL BE NO HARDCOPY SUBMISSIONS!  

Please note that Turnitin do not accept scanned submissions, all drawings/sketches may be scanned as PDF/JPEG format and import them into the appropriate sections of your report and submit your whole report through Turnitin as a PDF file.

d) Submission time and location

All written assignments are to be submitted through Turnitin in Blackboard by the submission time and date. If a student’s work is not identifiable once downloaded from Blackboard (e.g. no names) the work will not be assessed.

Re: Proposed outline requirements for new commercial complex development

Boolaroo is a suburb of the city of Lake Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, located 19 kilometres (12 mi) west of Newcastle?s central business district in Lake Macquarie?s West Ward. Over the past few years, Boolaroo has undergone a significant transformation and the former Pasminco smelter site at Boolaroo is expected to transform in coming years and is being rezoned for large?format retailers.

We require the construction of a retail shopping centre as part of our company growth strategy as well as to meet the current and future needs in Boolaroo. We have purchased a site at 116 T C Frith Ave, Boolaroo for this purpose. The site plan and a sample of borehole log can be found in attachments 1 and 2.

Although this is a design and build project we have a policy of “being involved” in the construction of our developments and as such require a report giving a clear indication of the structure, materials, techniques, adherence with current building codes, and the sequencing of the construction process, etc.

The Development

The appearance of the building should project the image of a successful professional company.

Materials to be long lasting and low maintenance. The structure should consist of two levels above ground with a basement for car parking, plant, and storage area.

It is anticipated that at least two major retailers will be housed within the shopping centre and the design is to reflect this. The rest of the shopping levels is to house a number of smaller retail outlets. The actual layout and number of retail outlets is left open for your design team to provide us with the optimal design solution and appropriate layout plans.

Access to the development can be via the TC Frith Ave, but no access to Creek Reserve Rd is allowed.
